Who doesn’t love maple syrup?  I am a little embarrassed to admit that I instantly think “maple” when I think of Canadian food.  A country with such a rich multi-cultural food tradition (not the least of which is French) deserve more consideration.  Nonetheless, I think of maple treats.  My in-laws go fishing in Canada every year, and I can always count on a bounty of maple candy and syrup upon their return.  But, I’m running a little low this year.  Any chance one of you might pick up a few maple-flavored treats for me while you’re at the opening for this next call?  It is time to go…

Check out this Call for Entries from Richmond Art Gallery (Richmond, BC, Canada) for a Mail Art Exhibition.  For those of you not in Canada, here’s a way to get an international show on your resume for FREE and free art too.  Take a closer look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Mail Art Exhibition

Read the full Call for Entries from Richmond Art Gallery in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada!Artists from all over the world are invited to contribute their work for the Richmond Art Gallery’s Mail Art Exhibition and Swap. This exhibition is intended to be a cultural exchange, where artists exhibit their works and receive new works as part of a swap. This shared enterprise is free from the rules of the art market, and yet we ask artists to respond to the theme of “economy” in all its forms.

Mail Art (aka Postal Art) is an art form where artists exchange artworks and correspondence through the mail to one another. The historical roots of Mail Art can be traced back to the Fluxus art movement of the 1960s, where several artists associated with the Fluxus movement began to work with Mail Art as the non-commercial exchange of creative ideas, correspondence and images in mailable formats that existed outside of the gallery system. In the 1970s Mail Art grew as an international art movement, and continues on nowadays with the help of the internet.

To continue on in the tradtion of this democratic art form, all entries received that follow the guidelines on the entry form will be exhibited.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

GREEN-NESS

Remember when green beens were everyone’s “go to” vegetable?  They were in every frozen meal and stocked in everyone’s pantry for a quick addition to any meal.  I suspect that’s how they got their bad reputation with kids.  I have noticed lately that sugar snap peas seem to be the new green beans.  Luckily, I love them, and kids seem to like the fact that they are a little sweeter than tried-and-true green beans. Deciding to enter this next exhibition should be (you guessed it)… a snap.  Take a look…

CHEESE!

I am frequently asked about my favorite foods, and of course, there are too many to name.  However, it would be fair to narrow it down Mediterranean food, Greek and Italian to be exact.  I could eat eggplant everyday, and if you add a little Parmigiano-Reggiano… I’m in heaven.  All this talk of Italian food makes me want to hand-deliver an entry to this next show.  How ’bout you?

but not a bear

I will eat snails, but peaches give me the willies.  Illogical, I know.  It is about the fur.  I eat kiwi and coconut because it is clear they are meant to be peeled.  But fresh peaches have human-like hair growing that peeling seems a little cannibalistic.  I hear your snickering; don’t judge me.  I’ll eat my peaches canned or just settle for nectarines, thank-you-very-much.  This next Call is all about the fur… in a good way.  Take a look!

Remember when the electric kitchen mixer was only a dream?  Well, no, I don’t either, but you have at least contemplated what it was like BEFORE we had electrical conveniences.  I, personally, don’t think I have the motivation or arm strength to deal with a manual egg beater.  But, I have no doubt that someone somewhere thought that an electric hand mixer was a ridiculous, impossible dream.  This next Call may test your ability to imagine the future, but I encourage you to be open to the possibilities.  Always be an optimist…

Check out this Call for Entries for Through the Looking Glass at Artform Gallery & Tattoo.  This is an all-hung show (or at least one piece per artist), and the entry fee is only $5 per piece. Hurry!  The deadline is in FIVE days.  It is worth a look…

CALL for ENTRIES:  Through the Looking Glass

Download the Through the Looking Glass Prospectus! From the Artform Gallery website:  “We’ve come across some very interesting technology that we believe will change how the world can be interconnected. The technology is in the palm of most peoples hands and they don’t even realize it. Our goal is to present this new form of communication to the world is going be through art, by having a gallery opening May 7th at Artform Gallery and Tattoo.”

“Nothing like this has ever been done before. We are trying to bring public awareness to the use of this technology in our everyday life, and what better way to do it through art. Especially since life imitates art on a daily basis. This is the future and the time to act is now while we are right on the cusp of this technological revolution.”

*Editor’s Note:  I encourage you to think about this Call with an open mind.  I was very hesitant to publish it because it is vague and unclear; however, after a discussion with the Gallery, I think they are just trying to keep their “secret technology” under wraps until the opening.  But to help you a little, there is an ACTUAL show, not just an online show.  There is an ACTUAL opening, but you don’t have to send your work… only .jpgs.  I have a theory on the technology, and if you email me we can compare theories.  I’ve wasted a lot of entry fees, but I think this $5 is worth being a part of the mystery.

MEDIA:  All media – Open to all 2 and 3 dimensional art

CALL for SUBMISSIONS: Social Rejection

Click to Subscribe to www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!A-SPARE-AGUS ME

I reject very few foods, but canned asparagus is near the top of my list.  Fresh asparagus is a happy, grassy, bright veggie that reminds me of spring when served ice cold after being blanched or roasted served with a  little balsamic vinegar reduction.  Yum.  Canned asparagus is gray, salty, slimy, and unworthy of being purchased. Rejected.  Feeling rejected yourself?  Vent a little frustration by participating in the Call for and exhibit all about being rejected.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Submissions for Social Rejection, an all-hung exhibit of rejection letters.  I know you’ve got them, folks, because you’ve been sending them to meHere’s your chance to put a Canadian show on your resume too.

CALL for SUBMISSIONS: Social Rejection

Independent Curator, Clayton Windatt is seeking your letters of rejection for display in his new exhibition Social Rejection

Learn more about Social Rejection and exhibit by Clayton Windatt! All artists have received rejections; some more frequently than others.  The guilt, shame, pain and isolation that an artist feels when they receive a rejection letter can seem insurmountable.  This project will empower artists that have been rejected by publicly acknowledging the hostile environment that the arts councils have created.

By exhibiting rejection letters from artists, collectives and organizations, this exhibition will address the stressful condition imposed on the artistic majority by the elite few.  Artists participating in this exhibition will be conforming to non-conformity and experiencing the empowerment of embracing their worthlessness.

ELIGIBILITY:  Rejection letters can be submitted by artists from all regions, disciplines and backgrounds, collectives and organizations. These letters will be adhered to the walls, ceiling and floor, to cover every surface of each exhibition space Social Rejection exhibits at. A roster of all participating artists will be presented at the rear of the exhibition venue acknowledging the participants, enabling acceptance through rejection.

Learn more about Clayton Windatt!DEADLINE:  June 1, 2011

NOTIFICATION:  All Hung Exhibit

ENTRY FEE:   Participants are asked to pay a small fee ($10 payable to “Social Rejection”) to help cover costs of creating and maintaining each exhibition as well as the costs of publicizing the event. Letters must be in English or French – there is no funding for additional translation services.

CURATOR/ARTIST:  Clayton Windatt is an artist, curator and outspoken advocate for artists’ rights. He holds a BA in Fine Art from Nipissing University and received his Graphic Designer certification from Canadore College. He contributes actively to several provincial and regional organizations as a writer, designer, and curator and is an active visual and media artist. Clayton’s current curatorial vision explores the unclear nature of the funding world, peer assessment committees and what constitutes acceptance.

NO LETTERS WILL BE RETURNED. If you need to retain your originals, please send photocopies.

COMMISSION:  No artist fees will be paid to any participants during this exhibition. This is an act of political aggression towards the arts councils of Canada. This statement will communicate the anguish that artists experience as a result of being rejected.
