Learn more about the Into the Sea Call for Submissions!SEAFOOD, anyone?

If you lived underwater, what would you eat?  Indulge me here.  If you were an inhabitant of Atlantis, what would be on the menu?  Are you really going to want to eat your fish, turtle & crustacean cohorts?  Can you be a vegetarian with only kelp to forage?  Mysterious, no?  This next Call wants your poetry or art interpretation of Atlantis.  If you figure out the food, let me know.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries for Fairytales of Atlantis the Into the Sea poetry/art collaborative project.  This is a small startup for a book with no entry fee & a whole lot of fresh, enthusiastic energy.  I have a good feeling about this one…

*Editor’s Note:  It has been my practice to only publish opportunities with which I have some sort of experience, either personally or through a friend/peer.  But, I also like to try to vet more informal opportunities, and like the straightforward nature of the curators, but I can’t guarantee you anything.  You have to weigh this opportunity for pros/cons just like any other publication option.

“According to Plato and Greek mythology, the island of Atlantis was a utupia whose inhabitants became too greedy and power hungry (there are some variations on this). I get lots of requests for restaurant recommendations.  And, I think sometimes people are disappointed when I give them the stereotypical answers, but famous places are famous for a reason.  For example, I would never visit New Orleans without a trip to the Cafe du Monde for beignets and cafe au lait or to Central Grocery for a muffuletta.  If you “pop-in” to this next show opening, make sure to check out my favorites.  Is it lunch yet?

Check out this Call for Submissions from Art Below for the Pop-Up Billboard Exhibit and Gallery Orange co-exhibit in New Orleans.  The fees are huge, but you can’t ask for better exposure.  Take a look…

*Editor’s Note:  If you have read the personal portion of this post, CALL for SUBMISSIONS:  Pop Up Billboard Exhibit, anywhere other than by email subscription or on ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, it has been published without permission and is considered theft.

EVERYDAY

As much as I love food, I truly despise making the decision about what to eat meal after meal.  And no one, except my 11 year old, will say what they really want to eat.  My husband always wants fish, but he couches it in “I want something lighter, healthier.”  I usually want something exotic or rich or covered in sauce, but I usually start with “why don’t we treat ourselves tonight?”  But not my kid.  What does he want for dinner?  Pizza and Swiss Cake rolls.  Every meal, everyday… just ask him.  The juror for this next Call knows what he wants too.  Take a look…

Cab E Net by Juror Mike McCollumJUROR:  Mike McCollum was born in Hoquiam, Washington but acquired many of his artistic sensibilities from the San Francisco Bay Area. “While at UC Berkeley I apprenticed with Peter Voulkos assisting him with 3 major outdoor sculptures.”

“Abstract expressionism is one of my primary influences and I am enamored with the idea of ‘arriving at’ rather than ‘aiming at.’   I want to surprise myself. My job as an artist is to make decisions–what to leave in and what to take out. I see art as a process of reduction–getting rid of the chaff and striving for the essence of the idea. In my career I have worked in many mediums — bronze, ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking and wood. I start with a basic idea and then it’s a matter of rescuing that idea from all the contrived directions it may take me.”

ABOUT SEQUIM ARTS:  Sequim Arts is a non-profit arts organization located on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state, with Mount Olympus to the south and Victoria, British Columbia across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the north.  Sequim Arts was established in 1969.  Many of their artists are nationally recognized and all members benefit from their local community’s appreciation and support.
