CALL for ENTRIES: Photo Shoot 2016

Learn more about the Photo Shoot 2016 Exhibit from the Black Box Gallery in Portland, OR!PRODUCE unboxed, unbagged

Grocery cashiers aren’t my biggest fans.  They seem to take issue with my lack of packaging.  Why do my two lemons need to be in a plastic bag?  Onions come in their own wrapping.  Why would I protect them from getting dirty when I am just going to peel them? Is it really that hard to corral my summer squash and carrots outside of a bag or box?  This next Call is a great reason to think inside the “box”.  Just leave your produce unfettered. Take a look…

cluck, cluck

The food landscape in the Smoky Mountains is a little different than anywhere else I have live.  Where I live, you can get a phenomenal French meal & bar food within a mile of each other.  And my daily commute takes me past chickens, lamb and cows, raised for food, in the front yard of a fairly typical suburban home.  Odd, but endearing.  This next call is about a different landscape entirely.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Objects of Wonder

Black foods are not abundant, and honestly, most of them aren’t really black anyway.  They are usually a dark, purplish hue, but I digress.  Not surprisingly, I have a favorite amongst them.  Sticky black rice with Thai custard.  If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear it is spiked with sedatives.  One bite and my spine is jelly.  This next Call requires more than a spine of jelly, but black certainly plays a role.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Black Box Gallery (Portland, Oregon) for Still Life: Objects of Wonder.  The fee is reasonable, and the juror has great curatorial vision.  Don’t miss this opportunity!

Still Life:
Objects of Wonder

Still life photography is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects.  Still life photography more so than other types of photography gives the photographer more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition.  Often still life photography is based on Dutch still life painting from the 17th century.

Still life photography is a demanding art, one in which the photographers are expected to be able to form their work with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with superb compositional skills.  The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them.  So what is contemporary still life photography?

CALL for ENTRIES: The Narrative Image

CANNED FOOD

There are very few truly black foods.  Black truffles, black and white cookies, squid ink pasta… none of those are truly black in color.  When I think of black foods, one shining, delicious example comes through immediately. Wild sturgeon roe from the Caspian Sea… Caviar.  Yes, fish eggs.  If you can’t get over what it is long enough to try it, you are missing out one of the culinary wonders of the world.  It doesn’t have to cost thousands.  Like wine out of a box, there is an audience for every grade of caviar.  This next Call takes the black caviar out of the tin and into the box, the Black Box.  Keep reading…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Black Box Gallery for Narrative: The Photographic Image.  This Gallery covers all the expense of printing, matting & framing your images, and they don’t even have to be for sale.  This is as hassle free as a photography exhibit gets.  Take a look…

Narrative

One Picture is worth a thousand words is a common belief that information can be conveyed more accurately and efficiently by images than words.  And the power of narrative, or story telling is at the foundation of much of photography.  Photograhers are creating complex and descriptive moments in time.  Contemporary photographers are crafting and documenting new forms of a visual short story.

ELIGIBILITY:  The exhibition is open to all photographers world wide, both amateur and professional.

MEDIA:  Photography.  Black Box will provide all framing, matting and printing for our exhibitions. The photographers who are selected into the exhibition by the juror will provide a high resolution Tiff file for our gallery to print for the exhibition.  Black Box covers all printing and framing costs. Other arrangements can be accomodated, if artist wants to send in a print.
