CALL for ENTRIES: 43rd Annual AKWS

Learn more about the 43rd Annual Juried from the Alaska Watercolor Society!

eggs WATER pasta

My local water utility only serves 943 addresses.  The tiny service area results in excellent tasting water.  Water quality affects everything I cook, most notably iced tea, poached & boiled eggs, and pasta.  I move in two weeks to a different water system.  The countdown is on.  This next call depends on water too.  Show them your best…

CALL for ENTRIES: monochrome

Learn more about the monochrome exhibit at Las Laguna Gallery!sautee or FRY?

There is a fine line between golden goodness & fried brown sameness.  I have an aunt who won’t eat “lacy” eggs or “dirty” biscuits, her phraseology for anything browned, but she only eats meats well done. (Go figure.)  Personally, I love a butter browned anything, but I shy away from the monotony of bread-crumb brown.  This next Call wants your monotone work –food references not requiredTake a look…

“When lost, it feels like we are going in circles.
When there is great accomplishment, it feels as if
we have come full circle.”
Marissa J. Menefee

I find myself rehearsing half-hearted apologies for the decisions to step off the edge of the earth, or so it feels, in pursuit of adventure and truly living in the coming years.  I am taking baby steps toward a goal, but feel an immediate, obligatory sense of guilt creep up on me after every accomplishment.  Proud but guilty. Excited but apologetic. Emotional semantics.

Seeing the work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Marissa J. Menefee, I thought, “this artist understands the circles in which I spin and spin and spin.”  Thanks, Marissa.

Recipes are sort of like guide books for me.  I have no interest in doing exactly what they say, but they are a great jumping-off point.  There are exceptions, thousands of them.  See “baking”.  Baking is a science.  Baklava, croissant, sourdough, layer cakes–making them is either complicated or at the very least time-consuming, but the pay off is HUGE.  This next Call is like that.  There are a LOT of details, so read the prospectus in full, but the pay of is huge.  First prize is $120,000, and it isn’t limited to representational work.  Take a look at this one…

CALL for ENTRIES: Arizona Aqueous XXXI

Learn more about Arizona Aqueous XXXI from the Tubac Center of the Arts!WATER is essential.

People risk their lives to protect water, and where I live, people just lost their lives in want of water.  I live in Cobbly Nob in Gatlinburg. On Monday, we realized Webb Mountain was on fire.  As we fled our yard was on fire.  Amazingly, our house escaped unscathed.  The fear is/was real; we can talk about that later. I just can’t yet. In the meantime, here’s a call that wants WATER from you.  I appreciate this approach to watercolor. Investigate…

The freezer saves dinner about two days a week in my house.  We purposefully cook more portions than we can eat and save the leftovers.  It started out as a way to send lunch with my kiddo for school, but it has become a dinner rescue regularly.  When you get busy and have forgotten to plan for dinner and live nearly a half hour from the closest grocery or restaurant, you’re grateful for frozen leftovers.  This next Call is not a leftover or frozen, but I did neglect to plan the publication more than a few days out from the deadline.  Sorry about that…

a legend LOST

David Bowie influenced so much of the world — music, fashion, design.  He died Sunday after a long battle with cancer.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Helen Green may have captured his sense of life and change and joy the best.  Thanks, Helen, for the bright spot in a dark day.

POINSETTIAs

Holiday meals at our house are inevitably eaten around a floral centerpiece, or more commonly, a potted plant.  But, for love of our dogs, there hasn’t been a poinsettia in our home for a couple of decades.  Instead, we keep a Christmas cactus or two year round.  The only rule of thumb is to treat them badly.  My mother didn’t water hers for a year, left it on the front porch during multiple early cold snaps.  She pulled it in  & watered it mid-October, and it was gorgeous just in time for Thanksgiving.  So, as a rule, don’t eat your floral holiday centerpieces, but a Christmas cactus might protect your pets if they get the munchies.  This next Call is looking for your perspective on flowers this winter.  Take a look…

Whether a walk down a garden path, or discovering fragile gentle beauty on a woodland trail, flowers have been a silent still and inspiring subject throughout time.  Flowers express love, celebrate rights of passage, such as marriage, birth and death, providing peace for the weary and comfort for the stressed.  They are the passion and tenderness of the lover.  Comfort for the grieving.” — lithamoon.com
