Although I prefer living in the mountains, I truly love coastal food –fresh fish, citrus squeezes & sticky sweet frozen treats. But you know what really makes me think of the beach? Muffulettas. They are the perfect “sea-food”, like an antipasto sandwich with olives and peppers, meats and cheeses all marinated and compressed in a hollowed out crusty loaf or round. The girls-eat-salad debate continues. Stock photography makes it appear that women can barely nibble a leaf without laughing. Men in movie bars disparage women who eat salads for their sexier steak-eating counterparts. Body-shamers think women should only eat salad while movie intellectuals think kale salad is for silly hipsters. I am uncertain how gender really applies to food. I only know that after a weeks on the road, there is little better than hand-torn greens and back yard veggies from the farmers’ market topped with a homemade dress. My husband agrees. My next kitchen will not have cabinet doors. My need for symmetry & years of practice in downsizing lend to neat kitchen cabinets. There are exceptions: storage containers whose lids hide like socks in a dryer and the lazy Susan corner cabinet that probably has unflavored gelatin from 2010 hiding in the shadows. I am moving to an all new, albeit all tiny, space in 12 to 18 months, and all the kitchen storage will be open. All light and no shadows for me. My kitchen is clean-ish. Can you eat off my floors? Absolutely not. I am pretty good about cleaning as I cook so there isn’t a disaster to clean up afterward. And, crumb-y counters are my pet peeve; so I keep them wiped down. But despite my best efforts, I have an ant problem. I find a dozen or so small black ants on my kitchen counters every time I go in. I’m tempted to incorporate them into my next recipe just to send a message to the rest of their kind. This next Call could be a reason to spare their little lives, or not…

Nothing stretches the photographic imagination like a visit to a strange new world, but on this trip you needn’t go far to find a photo worthy subject; the wonderful world of bugs intersects and parallels our own. Like humans, bugs are everywhere! So this month, forget the cobwebs of your mind, grab your camera and your knee pads and worm your way into the nooks and crannies of the fantastic world of the creepers and the crawly!
