celebratory EDIBLES

Do you make food resolutions?  No, I don’t mean diets.  Do you make promises to eat healthier or cleaner?  Or maybe to cut some food that makes you itchy, grouchy or gas-y?  Yeah, me neither.  Not anymore.  My eating habits go with the flow.  I eat a lot of whole, fresh foods, punctuated by occasional, terribly-crappy junk food, and it seems to work for me, ha.  This year, I am resolved to drink more bubbly.  I love Prosecco.  I like the sense of celebration, and I want to spend more time celebrating the little stuff.  What is your go-to drinkable or edible celebratory treat?  Chocolate? Guac?  Join me for my year of Yay!  We deserve it.

My last major change was the abandoning of all dairy except whole milk options, and a complete, mid-career left turn in mediaYikes.  Until my change of media a couple of years ago, I was working, almost exclusively, as a xerographist.  There is no Xerography Association, locally, nationally or internationally, to my knowledge.  So, I never had the ability to take advantage of media-specific membership.  Now that I am a watercolorist, I have more options.  However, because I embroider over my paintings, my work is typically considered mixed media by painters and painting by fiber artists.  I’m not sure if I’ll ever find a watercolor or fiber art society to call home.  Do you have a media association that you love?

One of the benefits of association shows is the prestige.  Because they are almost always juried by working master artists, the recognition of your work is meant to be a stamp of approval on your dedication to developing your skills, plus, they often have large cash prizes.  There are frequently multiple show opportunities throughout the year as well as educational & critique options that can’t be found anywhere else.  THOSE are all great arguments for the next Call, but I’m not an oil painter.  If you are, this is a great show.

Check out this Call for Entries for the 28th Annual Nat’l Exhibition from Oil Painters of America to be exhibited at the Illume Gallery of Fine Art (Saint George, UT).  $100,000 in awards including $25K Best of Show.  Don’t wait…

OPEN CALL: Greenshields Grant

Learn more about available Artist Grants from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation!the deepest CUT

If you want to learn to cook well, I recommend starting with knives.  Every dish is made more difficult with a dull knife.  I had a brief affair with being a chef that put me in cooking school for a year.  The first thing I had to buy was a full set of very expensive knives.  (My mother had mine monogrammed. No kidding. SO embarrassing.)  Fear not, you can start with just a couple of not-so-expensive knives.  Everyone starts somewhere.  This next Call is looking to help artists just making their start.  Need funding?

Check out this Open Call from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation (Quebec, Canada) for Artist Grants.  No entry fee & a ongoing deadline makes this grant the perfect opportunity for students & beginning artists.  Take a look…

My child volunteered me to make tamales for his entire Spanish class.  He then neglected to schedule being home to assist me. (Fear not; I didn’t strangle him.) I love tamales, and I love making tamales.  The smells are earthy, the masa is fluffy & husks are the perfect wrapper.  I often make the ones that are tied at each end because I prefer the masa to filling ration.  They are more common in north Mexico and Texas.  And whaddya know… this next Call also hails from Texas.  This is a prestigious opportunity for representational artists…

BUTTER

Why doesn’t food taste like it did when you were a kid?  It isn’t just sentimental remembrance.  It is because food isn’t made the same way or with the same ingredients, even at HOME.  I want to encourage you to experiment with the simplest of foods.  Try a simple saute of ANY organic vegetable in grass-fed butter, or if you don’t do dairy, try unrefined coconut oil.  It isn’t a new way of cook.  In fact, it is the most traditional way.  All vegetables used to be organic.  All butter used to be from grass-fed cows.  I’m suggesting that we’ve forgotten how good traditionally raised and prepared food is.  Try it again.  This call is also for the traditional.  Take a look…

Vermont makes me think of club sandwiches.  Vermont conjures images from the movie White Christmas of Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen singing “Snow, Snow, Snow” in the dining car on their way to rescue a ski resort sans the snow.  Just prior to their spontaneous singing escapade (complete with napkin mountains, parsley trees and sugar snow), they were eating clubs.  Vermont = club sandwiches.  Have one with extra bacon for me when you make it into the exhibit for this next Call.  Take a look…

Sometimes an egg is just an egg.  Yes, I love them benedict.  I love them scrambled, in caesar salad and as omelettes stuffed with goat cheese and peppers.  But sometimes an egg is great just as an egg.  The same is true of art.  While much of this site’s attention is directed at non-respresentational and contemporary art and photography, there is such a vast American tradition of representational work that I would be remiss not to celebrate that talent and potential in my readers as well.  Rachel Parker is one of my favorites.
