CALL for ENTRIES: Art Olympia 2019

Learn more about the 2019 Art Olympia International Open Art Competition!

wholly MINE

I’ve spent a lifetime drinking 2% & skim milk without concern to its origin, only the expiration date.  As the world has become more conscious of what we put in our bodies, I continued to drink lower fat options from dairies employing more healthful methods of production.  But even those varieties are often too sweet and are ineffective in adding flavor and consistency to my cooking.  I have finally given into the value of organic, whole milk products.  Value-driven shopping isn’t always the cheapest route.  This next Call costs more to enter than some others, but it offers HUGE cash award options.  Is this the right value for you?  Only you can decide.

Check out this Call for Entries from Art Olympia (Japan) for International Open Art Competition.  $60 Entry. $120K cash award for first place plus a full range of additional cash awards from $500 to $30,000. Interested?

nuts for NUTS

I make a lot of granola these days.  I tripped across this mostly Paleo recipe & altered it to taste.  (We don’t eat Paleo, specifically, but I am often drawn to the recipes.) This version is absent the oats found in most granola, so it lacks the chalky, starchy lethargic quality of the stereotypical bagged cereal.  My version is mostly nuts & seeds with a bit of dried fruit, coconut oil & a dash of honey.  There seems to always be a batch in the oven, and I’m going through roll after roll of parchment paper.  It is brain food; try it.  This next Call is looking for works on paper.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Site: Brooklyn (Brooklyn, NY) for Art on Paper.  $35 entry fee & 50% commission.  This could be a good opportunity for some contemporary artists. Is this one right for you?

I live in black bear country, and hyperphagia is coming to an end soon.  Hyperphagia is the time of year when the bears gorge themselves in preparation for their winter “hibernation”, although black bears don’t really hibernate, per see. the PLATE truth

Where are the beautifully plated foods?  I have been home from my residency for 3 days, and I miss my housemates, my studio, the time to focus solely on creation, and honestly, I miss the sauce swirls and flower garnishes on every meal.  So bratty, I know.  Even the goulash was stunning.  Fear not, I’ll publish the Call for that residency another day.  In the meantime, here’s a Call for your best still life work.  Investigate…

MEDIA:   Open to work in any medium including digital and experimental mediums

THEME:  STILL LIFE “can be a very personal view of an artist’s daily life. . . . The magic of still life imagery is that they [sic] can show us a new way of looking at the ordinary objects around us. Once they are placed into a specific arrangement and then captured in paint, ink, pastel, photography or any other medium – the objects take on a whole new meaning. They are imbued with a life beyond the ordinary. Their existence becomes recorded in time. The objects chosen for a still life painting often have a special meaning, either on a personal, cultural, societal, religious or philosophical level. The themes surrounding the artwork often provoke introspection and reflection in the viewer. The way that the objects are depicted can evoke a wide variety of emotions“. –art-competition.net

lost in TRANSLATION

So, I’m writing this post from an artist residency in New York.  I have been here for three days, and I have lost 5 pounds.  I am eating glorious food prepared in a traditional French manner breakfast, lunch & dinner, compliments of the restaurant on the property.  How is this possible you ask?  I eat exactly three meals a day.  Normally I am a grazer, eating off and on all day.  But, I am currently in a town with a population of approx. 150 people without a vehicle or availability of a local grocer.  I have spent three solid days in my studio coming out only to be fed,  and the end result is weight loss.  I can see the tabloid headline now — “Emerging Diet Trend:  eat anything & lose weight”. Ha.  Until then, here’s a Call for emerging artists.  Bon appétit..

presto PESTO

My menu has been pesto-riffic this month.   Two visits to West Virignia resulted in my returning home with the bounty of someone else’s garden, and her basil crop is booming.  Add a few walnuts (my preference over pine nuts), some parm & EVOO, and I have the best pesto on the block, if I do say so myself.  This next Call wants to know about your flowers, plants & gardens.  This is a perennial favorite, ha…

hold the SHRIMP

The people with whom I eat most often have lots of food allergies –milk, shellfish, wheat.  So how does a food co-exist with food allergies?  The secret is parallel thinking.  For example, I need to make chili paste for Thai dishes, but my husband is deathly allergic to shellfish.  Who might love Thai food, but naturally wouldn’t eat shrimp?  Vegetarians.  Vegetarian chili paste is made with shiitake mushrooms as the substitute for shrimp. Problem solved.  This next Call is about coexistence, diversity & inclusion on a much larger scale.  Take a look…

brain FOOD

There are lots of foods I eat that give others pause.  There are lots of foods that I have tried once but will never consume again.  Then there are foods that make no sense to me, at all.  When I was in college, my favorite 24 hour diner was legendary.  It had been open since the 1930s, and because it was located just steps from the state capitol, the stories that built its reputation were also legendary.  The menu was populated with standard fare like over-easy eggs and BLTs, but among the meat options included were souse, head cheese & calf brains.  Really?  Did any of those things come in such high demand that they warranted permanent menu status? *shudder*  I’ll keep my brain associations within my own head, thank-you-very-much.  Speaking of heads, take a look…
