CALL for ENTRIES: Texture

Learn more about the Texture Exhibit from LA Photo Curator! always NUTS

I have been craving the butter crunch of nuts lately.  Between having friends with nut trees and a mother that can’t stay out of the wholesale grocer, I always have an abundance of pecans & walnuts in the pantry.  Now they are sneaking their way into every dish from breakfast oatmeal to salads at lunch and every imaginable cuisine at dinner.  I’m wondering how long my family will appreciate the texture  and not notice the source, ha.  This next Call is all about texure.  Take a look…

Give my choice, I will take acidic or fatty foods over the super sweet.  Give me the zing of wine-laden vinegar or the melt of a beautiful ghee in place of your sugar-crusted desserts.  My palate has transformed over over many years.  Don’t misunderstand, I still love a good cupcake, but I long for more complex choices.  This next Call is an easy choice to make, and a sweet win if you get it.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Windows

Learn more about the Windows edition of Don't Take Pictures!clink CLINK

Except for a few specialty pieces, I’ve always owned white dishes.  I love color, but food has always been the creative expression for me –even when my husband spent two years as a commercial potter.  In recent years, we’ve begun slumping glass part time in a kiln shed built onto our back deck.  I am intrigued by the patterns and textures and colors as they meld together.  It make me want to make a different sheet of glass for every window in my house.  This next Call is a salute to that very visual framework.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: What Remains

Learn more about the What Remains exhibit from LA Photo Curator!mystery LUNCH

My favorite culinary masterpieces are created from the random remains of my refrigerator or pantry.  This is how lunch comes to be almost every day.  Left over veggies from salad or stir fry end up as spring rolls; emergency canned goods create the best vegetable soup.  Because I live in a more rural location, bad weather & poor grocery planning can result in a hungry household.  But a little creativity amongst the ruinous remains, turns out the most delightful surprises.  This next Call wants to see what you creat from what remains.  Take a look…

I have kept my word.   I am taking fewer pictures of my food in public.   You would be proud.  I am amazed at how often I’ve finished a dish before it occurred to me “I should have photographed that”.  Maybe I’ve just been too hungry by the time food arrives.  And, while my Insta feed is decidedly less interesting, my food IS warmer.  This next Call wants to know how social media has influenced YOUR work.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Issue 11 Incandescent

Learn more about Issue 11 from Incandescent Zine!color me STUFFED

The Thanksgiving sea of brown food has passed.  Luckily, my family forgoes the turkey, dressing, gravy & rolls thereby missing out on a good portion of the brownness of it all. I crave color even in my food.  A star of this year’s menu was the beet & clementine salad.  Beets are plentiful year around due to how well they do in cold storage.  If you are one of those folks that swear they dislike beets, make a point to try them fresh roasted.  (Message me for a recipe.)  In the meantime, here’s a call that also craves color.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Hometown

Learn more about the Hometown Exhibit from L.A. Photo Curator!easy being GREEN

I’m still eating local greens even though it is almost November.  Pressure-cooked mustard & collard greens served with a dash of vinegary hot sauce is a rite of passage in the South.  You aren’t really an adult if you don’t love cooked greens, but I’ve never had a taste for anything except creamed spinach, making me feel like the hometown heel.  But, I am newly-enamored of raw greens.  Everyone yearns for Spring lettuce, but my Fall salads of peppery mustard greens highlight my recent menus–still available locally, and they last forever.  What reminds you of your hometown?
