presto PESTO

My menu has been pesto-riffic this month.   Two visits to West Virignia resulted in my returning home with the bounty of someone else’s garden, and her basil crop is booming.  Add a few walnuts (my preference over pine nuts), some parm & EVOO, and I have the best pesto on the block, if I do say so myself.  This next Call wants to know about your flowers, plants & gardens.  This is a perennial favorite, ha…

CALL for ENTRIES: Embracing our Differences 2019

Learn more about the Embracing our Differences 2019 exhibit!

hold the SHRIMP

The people with whom I eat most often have lots of food allergies –milk, shellfish, wheat.  So how does a food co-exist with food allergies?  The secret is parallel thinking.  For example, I need to make chili paste for Thai dishes, but my husband is deathly allergic to shellfish.  Who might love Thai food, but naturally wouldn’t eat shrimp?  Vegetarians.  Vegetarian chili paste is made with shiitake mushrooms as the substitute for shrimp. Problem solved.  This next Call is about coexistence, diversity & inclusion on a much larger scale.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: A Show of Heads 2018

Learn more about A Show of Heads from the Limner Gallery!

brain FOOD

There are lots of foods I eat that give others pause.  There are lots of foods that I have tried once but will never consume again.  Then there are foods that make no sense to me, at all.  When I was in college, my favorite 24 hour diner was legendary.  It had been open since the 1930s, and because it was located just steps from the state capitol, the stories that built its reputation were also legendary.  The menu was populated with standard fare like over-easy eggs and BLTs, but among the meat options included were souse, head cheese & calf brains.  Really?  Did any of those things come in such high demand that they warranted permanent menu status? *shudder*  I’ll keep my brain associations within my own head, thank-you-very-much.  Speaking of heads, take a look…

something SALAD

For most people, the concept of salad is abstract at best –egg, chef, Caesar, Cobb, chicken.  Something loosely defined by intent but not really definable.  You can’t order a salad & know what you’ll get because everyone brings their own meaning to “salad”.  Lately it always means spinach, mushrooms, strawberries & feta, but my mother jumps directly to the three bean variety.  This next Call is waiting for what you will bring to abstract.  Don’t miss your chance…

“. . . the brain mirrors the expanse of the entire cosmos… and beyond. Each moment is unique. Each moment is identical.” Gabrielle Shannon

For most of my life I felt I had a good handle on people as a species –essentially good & well-intentioned but deeply flawed.  But the past few years have opened my eyes to my own bias & rocked my faith in good intentions.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Gabrielle Shannon, reminds me that the world is bigger than ourselves, bigger than our experience.  Check our her full statement!

all JUICED up

I have to learn to stop reading the comments sections on social media posts.  Even when I think I found a safe, foodie-friendly post, I end up amazed by the viciousness of the battles over juice as the fiber-less evil cousin of fruit or the severing of parental rights over cereal as breakfast food.  Do our food choices speak to the human condition, or is it how we judge others that speaks to our place in the world?  I am always happy to hear your thoughts.  This next Call would also like to know what you have to say about the human condition.  Investigate…

These myriad strongholds of energies, which hopefully inspire your works, should speak to us as they represent your brightest or darkest experiments and enlightening realizations in your life and should be represented as such here in your fine artwork for us to absorb and potentially integrate into our own lives.  So, your submitted creations should express the subject as felt through the artist’s empathy or subjective eye of experience.  The message is meant for us, the viewer.”
