give ’em something to TACO ‘BOUT

This next Call is for you, but the memes don’t have to be about food.  I promise…

Put simply, memes are cultural viruses; they’re ideas spread throughout our collective consciousness with a speed we can scarcely observe. As memes mutate & shift — seeding & replicating in the minds of ever-growing numbers of people — their popularity & trending lifespan become signposts which define broader cultural moments. Dig deep and decode the cultural viruses that live in you: show us your dank memes. –from nonfictiongallery.com

PIE

I talk to myself in the grocery store –okay everywhere.  But, it is worst in the grocery store.  In the produce section last week, I was standing in front of a mountain of shiny red apples when I muttered, “I don’t get it.”  As you know, I advertise my disinterest in the grainy texture & overly sweet flavor of many red varieties of apples on a regular basis.  I tend to prefer them green & tart; sue me.  My grocer had approx. 2 dozen green apples & 20 dozen red varieties for sale, hence the “I don’t get it.”  But this time, a woman in my age range was standing next to me while I muttered.  She turned, looked me in the eye & said, “If you don’t like apples, you’re not American.”  Really?  Is my nationality now determined by my fruit choices?  Lady, step away from the apples & toward the hard cider.  This next Call is all about being American.  Take a look…

Wanted

We are often given gifts that are unsightly, unseemly, or straight out of a nightmare. Often these “gifts” stay with us, sometimes for the better. The gifts we never wanted take many forms, both physically and emotionally. In the end we have to ask—are gifts given for the sender or the receiver?

For the exhibition The Gift You Never Wanted, Non-Fiction Gallery seeks works of art that explore the idea of the gift as a burden or a blessing.

and peanuts

Most people associate Georgia with peaches, or maybe peanuts (thanks to Jimmy Carter), but I always think of barbeque ribs or creamy lobster bisque.  Random, I know.  I grew up in a suburb of Atlanta as a young girl, and barbeque ribs were a standard at least one night a week during the summer.  Once a teenager, I made treks to Savannah with my mother to have table-side Caesar salad and lobster bisque from our favorite restaurant.  I suppose every person’s food story is a unique work of non-fiction.  This next Call is your non-fiction opportunity to tell your own solo story.  Take a look…

BEANS?

My mother cans green beans for me every year, and when I arrive to pick them up for winter back stock, her questions is always, “Greens or beans?”  Apparently toward the end of the canning batch, the last few jars have an excess of beans from the ones that fell out of the greens while cooking.  My mother thinks those little beans are the star of the show, while I’ll take the greens every time.  If your your smallest art could be the star of the show, this next Call just might be for you.  Take a look…

Bold. Talented. Demanding. Idolized.

Whether they are known for their powerhouse vocals and intoxicating talent or their over-the-top, won’t-stop, vogue-til-you-drop life and style, a true diva is a muse to the masses. With public response shifting between veneration and vilification, divas captivate, terrify and inspire. They unapologetically demand devotion while remaining utterly unapproachable, keeping the world at a measured distance.

Non-Fiction Gallery wants to bring the celebrity divine within reach.  Rather than choosing the more obvious route of “large persona, larger artwork,” the gallery’s next juried show will feature the world’s favorite superstars on a pocket-sized scale.  Show them your smallest works inspired by the biggest and boldest doyennes.

Though the idea of the ‘real’ has a multitude of meanings, it has been endlessly interpreted by artists and holds particular significance in our ever-changing world.

Artists approach reality and its relationship to representation through numerous types of media and with many distinctive standpoints. The term ‘reality’ has been consistently redefined and broadened to include new realms, like the virtual, the personal, the unscripted, the digital, the hallucinogenic.

Non-Fiction Gallery is looking for works that explore the many facets of the concept of reality.

Seafood usually conjures the image of a beach-front town for most, but I always think of Savannah, Georgia.  I’m not crazy about sand, so I’d spend my lunchtime at the River House over a bowl of lobster & crab bisque over a sandy crab boil at the beach any day.  Going to the opening of this next Call would be the perfect excuse to put away some seafood.  Take a look…

RE: Tale

Everybody has a story to tell. We are constantly creating tales in our heads. They might be our own doing, they might be partially vicarious or perhaps completely borrowed. These accounts often get restructured and retold, evolving each time. This is not unlike contemporary art, which by nature constantly strives for reinterpretation.

Fitting the concept of something that is partially untrue in a gallery called “Non-Fiction” seems to be ill-fitting. However, borrowing from the gallery’s vision statement, everybody’s tales, whether personal or fictitious, “inspire life-changing dialogue.” After all, Aesop never needed a true story to communicate his vision.

In today’s contemporary art scene, artists have deconstructed the idea of a story to fit their medium and surface preferences. This juried exhibition strives to showcase the breadth of interpretations of the concept of “visual storytelling.”

lurkey

I don’t eat turkey on holidays.  I’ve never liked the pressure of culinary conformity, or any other kind for that matter.  I usually have ham or duck.  Interestingly enough, I cooked a turkey the week before Thanksgiving this year because they were on sale.  But, all of the stories of people burning their houses down while attempting to deep fry their turkey don’t make me want to try that method.  I realize those stories are exaggerated to almost urban legend status, but I am simply not enticed.  I AM enticed by this next Call focused on  urban legends though…
