The notion of eating healthy is an abstract one. Even putting ethical concerns aside, there are health benefits (and disadvantages) to embracing vegetarianism, veganism and even raw diets.  Sugar is the devil, but artificial sweetners are differently malicious.  An excessively fatty diet can lead to heart disease but when coupled with an near absence of carbohydrates puts the body in ketosis that effectively treats diabetes in many.  Chocolate and red wine and coffee and kale, all abstractions of a healthy diet.

In art, abstraction takes a lot of forms.  At it’s broadest, abstraction is work that is non-representational. But, that begs the question, non-representational of what?  From that we get non-figurative & non-linear styles that are often included in surrealism, dadaism, cubism, fauvism, suprematism, art informel, neo-plasticism, de stijl & others.    This next Call wants to see all of your abstract creations.  My heart lies with abstraction, although I find reactions to it frustrating.  What’s your experience?  Are you insulated enough not to hear the voices of those that would dismiss the non-representational?  My mantra is ‘process not product’.  Excerise your muscle memory.  Lose yourself in process.  It works for me.  What works for you?

CALL for ENTRIES: Meltdown

It is no secret that I’m a little, well, let’s call it cheese “focused”. But we all have our priorities.  After being seperated by an ocean for 4 weeks, my husband and I stopped by a local dairy farm less than 24 hours after reunited… to buy cheese. Priorities.  Cheese glorious cheese.  A few days later, I made summer squash au gratin also known as “squash makes all the melted cheese a legitimate choice”, au gratin for short.  Melted cheese means I’m home, ha.  Think of it as my oven’s welcome mat. It is the best kind of meltdown.

I have been known to indulge in an epic meltdown of a personal nature on occasion.  The last U.S. presidential election put me in an ugly place for weeks.  Every insuing attack on civil rights, environmental regulations, access to health insurance & the ability to govern the workings of my own body have warranted their own meltdowns.  My work has changed.  My life has changed.  I worry about becoming numb to the suffering of others, to the loss of agency, to the restrictions on the ability to speak freely.  Where is this planet’s population headed?  While I was in Scotland recently, I was regularly engaged by locals about American politics.  People want to understand what is going on in the United States.  I couldn’t explain.  I can’t explain.  So, I just keep working.  Right now, THAT is what I can do.

don’t paint with FISH SAUCE

Every week I manage to make a handful of Insta-worthy, perfectly staged lunches & dinners, completely by accident.  More often, I conjure tasty dishes that are weirdly, mostly shades of brown due to carmelization, excessive de-glazing and a love for soy, fish, Worchestershire & all other sauces, brown & salty.  As you might imagine, the brown food pics, outside of coffee & walnuts, aren’t really winners on social media, ha.  My work is not brown or salty, but similar & not…

A few times per week I manage to pull off a perfectly Insta-worthy image of my work in progress –always at an off-kilter angle with short focus to blur unresolved issues and just the right light to allow a contrast-y filter to make me look like a rock star.  It is deceptive and born out of equal measure of insecurity and social media pressure to look like I always have everything effortlessly under control.  I have guilt, but not.  I don’t like feeding into the notion that studio life needs to be glamourous, but I also don’t like exposing my vulnerability underbelly to nameless, faceless critics.  Then enters this Call.  As you might imagine, I read A LOT of Calls, and I like options for art publication.  But THIS call is different.  This call wants to see the mess.  Finally, there is an option to show studio life, work-in-progress specifically.  I think that this is the kind of aspirational we can feel good about –always real, likely messy & unresolved.  Seeing yourself represented as an artist is important.  This Call is the brainchild of one of our previously Featured Artists, Robyn Thompson.  It is a project of her course work while working toward her Master of Arts in Social Practice, making this a great opportunity to lift up ourselves AND one of our very own.

I cheated on my husband with shrimp tacos.  He’s contact allergic to shellfish, and on the rare occasion I eat a meal without him, my radar is firmly set on shrimp.  I feel guilty while eating them, like I’ve cheated, and then have to go through a hazmat-style sterilization process afterward.  But, shrimp.

I had that shrimp-y luncheon with my a friend, an accomplished realist painter.  We spent time talking about our plans for the next weeks and months. She paints prolifically and noted, “I haven’t even been looking at Calls because I can’t do anything until Fall”.  Between work for galleries that represent her, a couple of invitational shows and a museum solo show that comes down this week, she can’t lose focus.  Realizing that kind of focus has been my goal for months, and I am beginning to see results, but it requires tuning out the things that don’t serve my focused goal.

CALL for ENTRIES: Saturated

Somebody help me love kale.  I want to love love kale (in some other manner than deep fried kale chips, ha)., but I just don’t.  If I’m gonna eat a leafy green, I’m gonna choose spinach every time.  Give me arugula or chard.  Meanwhile, organic kale was 99¢ a pound this week.  It is a gorgeous color though.  I’ve been toying with making my own watercolors.  Maybe THAT is how I learn to love kale.

For years I worked in black and white, and I loved the big, bold graphic nature of that work.  But, color.  Color has turned my work around.  I fell so in love with color that I changed media after TWENTY years.  Like any grade schooler, I get that yellow + blue = green.  But, when you find the right gambogue hue & add just a touch of thalo blue, you get to watch them bloom into a gorgeous shade of peacock.  This newly found watercolor magic gives power & voice to what I tried to represent literally with typography and b&w symbolism for all those years.

I’ve tried to be more transparent over the past weeks about my own “which” & “why” & “what” questions because I am hoping my answers will help you formulate your own questions and discover your own answers.  The Barrett Arts Center is a “yes” for me.  Beautiful venue, great jurors, superb curatorial history, excellent resume builder.  I have been working on a piece for months that would be the perfect piece to enter.  If I can just keep myself on track to finish, I am entering this one.  Do you have color you want to strut out like a proud peacock?  Then THIS is a great call.

JUROR:  Michael Rooks joined the High Museum of Art as Wieland Family Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art in January 2010. Besides his responsibilities at the High, Rooks was appointed Commissioner and co-curator of the U.S. Pavilion at the 12th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia in 2010 and is a member of ActArt, the President’s committee for contemporary art and social action. Prior to joining the High Museum, Mr. Rooks held curator positions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, The Contemporary Museum Honolulu, and the Honolulu Academy of Arts.  At Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, Rooks curated several group exhibitions and solo projects in addition to survey exhibitions of work by Roy Lichtenstein (1999) and H. C. Westermann (2001) for which he co-authored Westermann’s catalogue rasionné. 

AWARDS:  $825 in cash prizes –$500 Juror’s Prize, $200 2nd Prize, $125 Honorable Mention.

COLD complication

As winter approaches, I am more & more distracted.  I buy a handful of pantry items for single recipes.  For example, I use canned cream-style corn in one indulgent corn pudding recipe and buttermilk only in cornbread.  But, the problem arises because they look like similar items in the cupboard –anything canned or my regular milk.  You only have to put buttermilk on one bowl of cereal to not want to make that mistake again.  My solution? Organization. A simple letter or two scrawled on the container top has stopped me from wasting time and food over and over again. 

In the studio, I am always walking the line between organized and over-planned.  My instincts run toward scheduling, pre-planning, color-coding and efficiency.  But, I also know that when I over plan, I have guilt when I stray from my original design that sometime keeps me on a path (that often isn’t really working) longer than I should.  But if I don’t schedule at all, I end up procrastinating, the stereotypical downfall of beret-wearing artists in movies everywhere.  This next Call is a perfect example.  I love this publication.  It is gorgeous.  The art is phenomenal. Even their Insta feed is fun and inspiring.  I keep thinking that the right work to submit will speak to me.  As a result, here we are a year or two later, I’ve managed not to enter yet.  So, let’s make a plan, be organized; enter early…

CALL for ENTRIES: New Contemporary

I have pureed everything today.  I made black bean soufflé early in the day to go with the slaw-topped taco my husband made later.  I cooked & pureed extra beans to put up in the freezer as a soup base for next week.  Lunch was delivery pizza.  Our mid-afternoon snack was  a mango-peach-guava-banana smoothie.  While my husband made apple-pepper slaw for our tacos, I processed a half-bushel of apples for applesauce.  I have washed my food processor four times today. (Just a reminder, no dishwasher in my house.) I am trying to keep busy

I mean, I did finish framing a commission while I am waiting for THREE past-due notifications. I need mindless busy. How do venues take our money and not notify on time? Why not just under-promise? Why not five themselves and extra week then surprise us all with an early notification? Of course, my imagination and insecurities ramp up to a 14 & I begin to assume that I haven’t gotten an email because I have been rejected, or,  that I was so bad that I didn’t warrant a response. When left with too much time to dwell on it, I start to become paranoid like an 1990s sitcom and wonder if my phone is working or if email is out-of-order. Ridiculous. So, soufflé, soup, smoothie & applesauce.  Noisy. Delicious. Busy. 

This next Call is screaming my name.  I’ve not been interested in a lot of galleries lately because I am looking to build a very specific profile for my resume.  I am trying to patiently wait for the academic & publicly funded shows I really want.  But I am digging this space.  There are a number of great art hot spots in New Mexico, like Satan Fe.  In fact, New Mexico is on my new short list of relocation possibilities.  This gallery supports a reassuringly diverse art aesthetic and range of media.  I like the unapologetic nature of this Call too.  I’m hoping to get my crap together & enter.  Let me know how it sounds to YOU.

AWARDS:  20 artists will be selected for an online group exhibit, “MOMENT IN TIME 2018” at Gallery25N; the exhibit and artists will be extensively marketed worldwide to over 26,000 people including art buyers, gallery owners, curators, collectors, etc.  One artist will be selected to receive the “Christopher E. Burke Fine Art Grant of $500. That artist’s work will become the image of the exhibition and will be used on the invitation, video title screen and on all online marketing.
