Food matters to me, inspires me. I believe that what we eat informs our health & happiness. I’m not talking about counting calories or carbs. I am concerned with whole foods, grown locally with minimal processing. Real food. I am always delighted to see food inspiring others. Chocolate has inspired art, including a sort of painting, in the the pastry arts for years, but did you know there are chocolate portrait painters? No joke. This next call is looking for work done through a painterly process, but I’m guessing they aren’t expecting chocolate. Investigate for yourself…

JUROR: Joey P. Mánlapaz is a painter & Associate Faculty at the Corcoran College of Art & Design since 1992, and is a Lecturer at Georgetown University. She also teaches painting at The Art League School in Alexandria, VA. She exhibits extensively in the U.S. and is recognized for her unique form of painterly photorealism in the styles of NY artists Tom Blackwell and Richard Estes and sensibilities of Edward Hopper. The D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities awarded Mánlapaz a 2014 Artist Fellowship for artistic merit.

AWARDS: Cash awards total $1000. Award contributors & recipients will be listed in the exhibition catalog.

Growing up, meat was the focal point of all meal preparation. Everything revolved around how long the meatloaf, turkey, fried chicken etc. had to cook. Every plate had to be picture perfect–1/2 meat (it is the South afterall), 1/4 starch (usually potatoes), 1/4 vegetable (often fried). As an adult, my meals still have a singular focus, but now that focus is ease of preparation, ha. This next Call for Entries is singular in focus as well. Be sure to check this out…

JUROR: Jennifer O’Neill is Director of Academic Advising for Undergraduate Photography at the Corcoran College of Art + Design. She graduated with a BFA in Photography from the Corcoran & received her MFA in Photography from the University of Delaware. Ms. O’Neill’s work has been well received and awarded for excellence nationally. Her photograms are carefully constructed tableaux examining the fine line that separates fantasy from reality. Dividing her time between NY and DC, Ms. O’Neill continues her work as a fine art photographer while teaching.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists between the ages of 17-25 are eligible. *Editor’s Note: This is supposed to be a show for emerging artists. My apologies to my readers who are offended by the notion that only 17 to 25 year old artists can be emerging. I feel ya.

MEDIA: Any original two or three-dimensional artwork created within the past 3 years will be considered by the juror. Works previously exhibited in MFA juried shows are not eligible.

DEADLINE: June 20, 2012

NOTIFICATION: July 13, 2012

ENTRY FEE: A maximum of 6 original works created within the past 3 years may be entered. 1 or 2 entries $35 (MFA members $15). Additional four entries $5 each. Entry fees are non-refundable.

JUROR: Linda Swanson received her MFA from Goddard College and BFA from Indiana University. She has shown her work nationally and her paintings are in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Newark Museum. She recently curated an exhibition & lecture at the Museum Gallery of Modern Art in Sofia, Bulgaria.

AWARDS: Cash awards total $1000.

SALES: Artwork must be priced for sale or marked POR (price on request). MFA facilitates sales by placing potential buyers in contact with participating artists but will not retain or request a commission from sold work.

I love kitchen gadgets, as you very well know. However, I’ve found lots of fun and funny uses for my least used kitchen accessories outside the kitchen all together. My favorite Wilton offset spatula for icing cakes has become my best palatte knife. And back before I cut off all my hair for ease and convenience, I had a favorite set of red and black enameled chopsticks that made fabulous hair sticks. Eye of the Beholder

Found Objects: (According to The Smithsonian Institution) “Found art, more commonly called found objects — in French, objet trouve — is a term used to describe art created from common objects not normally considered to be artistic. The idea behind found art is that the piece of art derives its significance from the context into which it is put. Found Art blurs the traditional lines of what is art and questions the very nature of art itself. Found objects are often used by artists and may include the repurposing of street signs, license plates, or bottle caps, use of recycled paper, or imaginative application of household items.”

ELIGIBILITY: All artists residing in the United States and Canada

MEDIA: The exhibition is held to showcase the works of fine art that have incorporated at least one or more found objects into their presentation. Any two or three dimensional submission following exhibition guidelines will be considered by the juror.

DEADLINE: August 24, 2011

NOTIFICATION: Sept. 23, 2011

ENTRY FEE: A maximum of 6 original works created within the past 3 years may be entered. 1 or 2 entries $35 (MFA members $20). Additional four entries $5 each. Entry fees are non-refundable.

JUROR: Janet Maher has been a working artist for thirty-five years, and is an Associate Professor of Art at Loyola University Maryland. She works in a wide range of mixed media, and teaches courses that reflect her interests, such as: Collage, Assemblage and the Found Object; Book Arts and Artist Books; Digital Mixed Media; Printmaking (Relief, Intaglio, Screenprint, Lithography and Alternative Processes), as well as Drawing and Two-Dimensional Design. She has exhibited widely and her work is in numerous public and private collections.

AWARDS: Cash awards total $1000. Contributors and recipients will be listed in the exhibition catalog.

GIMME CRABS

I miss seafood. I love my husband dearly, but his adult-onset allergy to shellfish has really put a crimp in our food lifestyle. Amongst my favorites are mussels steamed in white wine and Maryland blue crabs. Aside from the adults having gorgeous blue claws, they are delightfully yummy. Crack one for me at the opening of the show resulting from this next Call.

CALL for ENTRIES: Focal Point

NOTIFICATION: April 16, 2011 by email

ENTRY FEE: A maximum of 6 original works created within the past 3 years may be entered. 1 or 2 entries $35 (MFA members $20). Additional four entries $5 each. Entry fees are non-refundable.

ENTRY DETAILS: To submit your work on-line you will need to set up an account HERE with an email and password.

You will then be directed to the online entry point where you will be able to upload digital photographs of your work and pay the appropriate fees using a credit card or your PayPal account. Entries will not be valid until payment is received. Entry fees are nonrefundable.

Please note that there may be more than one exhibition open for entry. Your account will permit you to enter either or both but each has a separate entry point. If you have questions, contact MFA staff at Circle Gallery, 410-268-4566 or info@mdfedart.org.

JUROR: Laurie Snyder has been Chair of Photography at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore MD since1993. She teaches classes in the Alternative Process in photography, and The Artist’s Book in printmaking, which explores the book as concept and object. Prior to that, she taught at Cornell University, Ithaca College, and Syracuse University in New York. An active exhibiting artist, Snyder has shown her work to critical acclaim throughout the mid-Atlantic.

Snyder is currently working on several series: Nature and Lace, (pictured above and left) a series of photograms of antique lace paired with a photogram of plant material. These are silver gelatin prints; another group are wall books of plant matierial printed in cyanotype on rice paper.

Another on going series of photographs explores the concept of “Mend”which documents the repairs and mends in everyday life. Laurie maintains a studio in Baltimore and in Ithaca, New York.
