hold the noodles

Eating fewer ingredients has truly stretched my cooking skills.  My newest pet project has been to develop recipes that I love with the smallest number of ingredients possible.  I have a fantastic 6 ingredient eggplant lasagna.  With fewer ingredients, it becomes about the quality of the food and your knowledge of how to manipulate those ingredients.  This next Call is all about giving you the resources you need to stretch your skills so you can make the most of your art career.  This is simply great professional development for you.  Don’t miss it…

Check out this Call for Applications from Hamiltonian Artists and the Hamiltonian Gallery for the Hamiltonian Fellowship Program.  This is fantastic program with a low application fee and a $1000 yearly stipend.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: 52nd BAL Nat’l

Learn more about the 2014 BAL National from the Beaumont Art League!a mixed bag of
GROCERIES

I loosely plan a weekly menu each week by making sure there are at least seven proteins, seven green vegetables and a handful of starches available in the kitchen.  From those offerings, I try to make every week different.  But, since the proteins are almost always a couple of versions of same pork, beef, chicken and/or fish, making 52 different menus a year is a stretch.  And, I might add that there are only so many ways to prepare zucchini & broccoli.  But this next Call is the 52nd time this Call has been offered, and I promise the result has been different each and every time.  Maybe this is THE opportunity for you…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Beaumont Art League (Beaumont, TX) for the 2014 BAL National juried exhibition.  This the 52nd consecutive year for this exhibit.  This is their premier yearly exhibit.  Take a look…

Learn more about Juror Vera Barnett from the Beaumont Art League!JUROR:  Born in New York and educated at the acclaimed Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Vera Barnett moved to Texas in 1985.  She began using pool toys as still life subjects, but felt a desire for more emotional and personal subjects.  Her solution was to create her own models from sewn plastic.  Barnett’s process yields paintings injected with emotions that are authentically human, yet fabricated through completely synthetic materials.

AWARDS:  Cash awards totaling over $3,000 will be given out for 1st through 3rd places and purchase awards!  Awards will be announced at the opening reception on May 3, 2014.

off the old block

Cheese food is not cheese.  You’re allowed to like American cheese; feel free.  But, don’t take comfort in the idea that you are eating a natural cheese.  It is manufactured from milk, whey, milkfat, milk protein concentrate, whey protein concentrate, saturated oils; emulsifiers, salt & artificial coloring–and that’s assuming you aren’t consuming a diet variety.  Think of it this way…if the cheese can’t stand alone, then maybe it shouldn’t have the spotlight in any of your meals.  This next Call is looking for a big cheese (or six) to put in the spotlight.  Are you a big cheese?

Check out this Call for Entries from Penn State Altoona (Altoona, PA) for the Ivyside Juried Art Competition for solo shows at the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts.  The entry fee is only $10 for up to 24 images.  This is a great academic opportunity at a really low price!

for warmth

Buying fresh herbs usually signals the beginning of a great week of food at my house.  Cilantro ushers in a week of Mexican food, basil inspires Thai, and sage rings in the holidays.  Sage says comfort and warmth, much like a fresh tube of burnt umber paint.  Maybe burnt umber could be your inspiration for this next Call for painting.  Take a look…
