a CITRUS dream

Oranges trigger holiday memories.  So many different holidays, both secular and sacred, are celebrated during the month of December.  And regardless of the holiday, you’ll always find someone whose memory of that holiday is triggered by the smell of oranges.  My mother said that when she was a child, Christmas was the only time her family could afford citrus of any sort.  I have incorporated citrus into my entire sense of winter because it is the only time I can find super sweet clementines.  It is an odd sort of passing of the baton.

Now that most of the holidays have past, it is time to kick it into high gear.  I am attempting another 30 paintings in 30 days. (I don’t hold out a lot of hope of finishing that in grand style.)  Meanwhile I have 3 commissions & 3 shows that I desperately want to enter.  I am no longer a member of the cult of busy.  I don’t celebrate or glorify it.  But I have certainly bitten off more than I can chew. How do you rank your art priorities?  When you figure that out consider this Call.

Check out this Call for Entries from the Las Laguna Gallery (Laguna Beach, CA) for Mixed Media, Collage and Digital Art, $35 entry & 35% commission.  Don’t miss this opportunity…

CALL for ENTRIES: Animalz 2020

a sleepy SIP

Ginger ale has offered me clarity, of sorts.  As a 40-year insominiac, I have tried everything from warm milk to herbal remedies and tryptophan-laden foods to no avail.  For the last few years my only manner of sleep has been pharmaceutical, taken in half-doses to fend off side effects.  But in the end, long term use of sleep aids has side effects, the worst has been fogginess & some memory loss.  Six weeks ago, I started taking a double-strength, full spectrum CBD oil.  It took 5 days to build up in my system before I started magically falling asleep in 15 minutes instead of 3+ hours.  The pros a gentle lifting of my fog; I can hear the birds’ chatter outside my studio window again, even with this morning’s snowfall.  I am experiencing a gradual but noticeable improvement in my day to day memory which makes working in series flow easier. I am getting nearly twice as much sleep per night, on average, as I have since I was in elementary school.  The cons?  The taste of CBD oil. Ginger ale has ridden to the rescue and is an easy and obvious trade for chirping birds and living color.  What trade will you make?

With my newly-found sleep has come reduced anxiety surrounding my trajectory as an artist.  I know the paths, where they converge, where they change priority, if you’ll let them.  I cannot say this often enough.  Enter the shows that serve you.  Use them to determine your audience, test your narrative and create your own story.  The creative process will serve you if you let it.  This next Call is for a small gallery in California with a prolific show history and a straightforward curatorial approach.  Does this show offer an outlet that serves your work?  Investigate.

CALL for ENTRIES: Las Laguna Aqueous 2019

open up & say A-GUA

I quit smoking six and a half years ago.  I entirely expected to be able to better taste food.  What I didn’t expect was my sense of smell to like a blood hound.  My hearing also wildly improved, but my family believes the timing is just a ridiculous coincidence.  My sense of smell, while appreciated, has consequences.  The trash has to go out more often.  I can smell a soft spot in a potato in dry storage or an overly ripe banana all the way in my bedroom the minute I wake up.  The strangest smell revelation for me is water.  Water should be odorless, but it rarely is.  Tap water almost always reeks of chlorine or sulphur or has an acrid metallic odor. Ugh.

Meanwhile my husband is upfitting a small barn as my new studio, and it doesn’t have running water.  As a watercolorist, I have to have clean water.  As a solution, I designed an inexpensive system that pumps water from exchangeable 5 gallon jugs and a separate complex filter system to allow me to send the gray water out to water the flower beds.  I use non-toxic paints, and my filtration system is meant to capture the pigment, but I am going to plant white flowers… just in case.  This next Call is all about the water soluble media & has fewer guidelines than the society shows.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Unique Abstractions

Learn more about the Unique Abstractions exhibit from Las Laguna Gallery!

abstractly DRINKING SPEAKING

The notion of eating healthy is an abstract one. Even putting ethical concerns aside, there are health benefits (and disadvantages) to embracing vegetarianism, veganism and even raw diets.  Sugar is the devil, but artificial sweetners are differently malicious.  An excessively fatty diet can lead to heart disease but when coupled with an near absence of carbohydrates puts the body in ketosis that effectively treats diabetes in many.  Chocolate and red wine and coffee and kale, all abstractions of a healthy diet.

In art, abstraction takes a lot of forms.  At it’s broadest, abstraction is work that is non-representational. But, that begs the question, non-representational of what?  From that we get non-figurative & non-linear styles that are often included in surrealism, dadaism, cubism, fauvism, suprematism, art informel, neo-plasticism, de stijl & others.    This next Call wants to see all of your abstract creations.  My heart lies with abstraction, although I find reactions to it frustrating.  What’s your experience?  Are you insulated enough not to hear the voices of those that would dismiss the non-representational?  My mantra is ‘process not product’.  Excerise your muscle memory.  Lose yourself in process.  It works for me.  What works for you?

Check out this Call for Entries from the Las Laguna Gallery (Laguna Beach, CA) for Unique Abstractions, a show of abstract work in a wide range of media. $35 entry & 35% commission.  Don’t miss this opportunity…

boxy BITES

Making pasta used to be a joy.  I enjoyed hand-cutting linguine and stuffing beautiful little half-moon ravioli. But, my husband’s Celiac’s diagnosis put a crimp in my ravioli revelry.  Luckily GF flour has come a long way.  I am making pie crusts and little stuffed ravioli to my hearts content again.  I have dispensed with the round & half-moon shapes, along with my biscuit cutter, but I find the square has its own appeal.  This next Call appreciates the square form as well.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: It’s Political – 2018

Learn more about the 2018 It's Political exhibit from Las Laguna Gallery!

what TO EAT, or what NOT TO EAT

Famous words, “No politics, let’s eat.”  FOOD IS POLITICAL.  In the United States, for example, our Department of Agriculture suggests that half our diet be composed of fruits & vegetable (great); however, more than 60% of agricultural subsidies go to corn & other grains which are primarily consumed by the commercial meat & poultry industries.  Do you know how much of those subsidy funds go to growers of fruits & vegetables? Less than 1%.  Food is political.  This next Call wants to know what YOU have to say about today’s political climate, food politics optional, of course.  Take a look…

have some CANDY

My grandmother was addicted to candy. She would stock up near the candy-laden holidays Easter, Halloween and Christmas, and try to get it eaten at a faster rate than it would solidify in a solid block of colored sugar.  So, it wasn’t her sweet grandmotherly instinct to push candy on me at every occasion; it was stock rotation, ha. After she died, I could have started a candy store with the volume of candy in her kitchen. This Call is a chance for you to celebrate the life of someone who has passed from the physical world.  Take a look…

just PEACH-y

I sent my husband to the farmers market for turnips & beets.  He came home with honey & peaches.  I suppose it isn’t like going to the grocery where there are a proscribed list of possible foods you will encounter.  Instead, the farmers market offers an almost endless range of possibilities within your growth climate, lending itself to surprises, naturally.  This next Call is hoping for those same possibilities.  Send them a peach…

I have a tiny refrigerator.  Well, let me re-phrase that.  I have a small (by American standards) full-size refrigerator. When I down-sized to a smaller home in preparation for a more mobile existence, my refrigerator shrank too.  Luckily, my new smaller home & its appliances are located only 5 minutes from the grocery store which is a marked improvement from the 20+ minutes it took before I moved.  As a result, I can now by produce more often & store it outside of my new, tiny-to-me refrigerator, making for fresher, tastier meals.   This next Call wants to know about your botanicals, but they don’t have to be edible.  Take a look…

Flowers & other plants & trees are her favorite subjects.  Sally says, she strives to paint something more than simply a realistic depiction of these subjects. “I interpret the subject with brush in hand, allowing my imagination to select colors & forms. . . Painting is my therapy, my peaceful, creative place, and I treasure that,” says the artist.

The weirdness of my lunch is directly proportional to how badly I don’t want to go to the grocery store.  I spend most of my working hours in my home office/studio.  As a result, my work clothing standards are sometimes (often) not how I’d like to be seen in public.  So to avoid the extra work of dressing and driving and shopping, I create food collages of sorts –often disparate ingredients composed into pasta salads, casseroles & almost anything sauteed & stuffed into a corn tortilla.  This next Call is for traditional & digital collages; I don’t think food collage counts.  Take a look…
