I couldn’t sell anyone on rice as a side dish at my house this week.  But to avoid another trip to the grocery, I had to sneak it in chicken casseroles, veggie spring rolls and sausage gumbo. “Recycle, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition’s national juried show of art crafted from cast-off, discarded & re-purposed materials, will be a celebration of ingenuity and imagination.” –from bwac.org

ELIGIBILITY: Open to U.S. artists 18+

MEDIA: Open to all media

ENTRY FEE:  $45 up to 3, $5 ea. add’l (early bird) or $65 up to 3, $5 ea add’l after Feb 26

DEADLINE:  February 26, 2017 (early bird) or March 12, 2017 (final)

NOTIFICATION:  March 31, 2017

JUROR:  Harriet Taub is the Exec. Dir. of Materials for the Arts, one of the largest reuse centers in the U.S & a program of the NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs.  She joined MFTA in 1998 & also co-founded and helms its affiliated nonprofit, Friends of Materials for the Arts, which provides teacher training, arts and environmental education, and arts programming like artist residencies.  Taub graduated from NYU’s Steinhardt School of Education. She currently sits on the boards of the environmental organization the Reuse Alliance and the arts organization Pentacle.

AWARDS: Best of Show Gold $1000, Most Innovative Use of Materials $500, People’s Choice $250, Curator’s Choice $250 & ten $100 Certificates of Recognition.

SALES: BWAC will retain a 25% commission on all exhibition sales.

AGAIN

Cooking is a constant exercise in recycling & upcycling in my house.  A whole chicken will provide a dinner, chicken salad for lunch, broth for future soups, scraps for breakfast hash or lunch tacos plus a treat or three for the pup.  My least favorite of all these is the original chicken dinner.  The upcycled & recycled varieties are always superior, just like the media for this next exhibit.  Never have an empty plate by expanding your menu by incorporating what you already do…
