CALL for ENTRIES: The Sea

Learn more about The Sea exhibit from 1650 Gallery! hold the FISH

Although I prefer living in the mountains, I truly love coastal food –fresh fish, citrus squeezes & sticky sweet frozen treats.  But you know what really makes me think of the beach?  Muffulettas.  They are the perfect “sea-food”, like an antipasto sandwich with olives and peppers, meats and cheeses all marinated and compressed in a hollowed out crusty loaf or round.  An entire meal in a handful that doesn’t get stale or mushy.  This next Call wants to know about your sea experience.  Take a look…

Check out this Call from the 1650 Gallery (Los Angeles, CA) for The Sea, a juried photography exhibit. $35 entry & free matting and framing (pre-set sizes). There’s even a way to avoid shipping. Don’t miss this…

“What is it then about the bird that affects us so? Are they everything we want to be beautiful, carefree and literally above it all? Do we envy their freedom? Do we project on to them our desire to take wing from the grave cares and pedestrian repetitions of our human-ness, to a far place both wild and beautiful, and a life lived literally ‘on the fly’ ?” — from 1650 Gallery

CALL for ENTRIES: Girls, Girls, Girls!

Learn more about the Girls, Girls, Girls!girly GREENS

The girls-eat-salad debate continues. Stock photography makes it appear that women can barely nibble a leaf without laughing.  Men in movie bars disparage women who eat salads for their sexier steak-eating counterparts.  Body-shamers think women should only eat salad while movie intellectuals think kale salad is for silly hipsters. I am uncertain how gender really applies to food.  I only know that after a weeks on the road, there is little better than hand-torn greens and back yard veggies from the farmers’ market topped with a homemade dress.  My husband agrees.  And while salad may not be all about the girls, this Call is. Take a look…

“Oh, the compelling complexity of woman… Her power knows no limits. Bear but a touch of her hand and she will hold you aloft. And one look askance can send you crashing down. Who can define the power of the ponytail? The face that launched a thousand ships? The ever-changing couture? Puzzles wrapped in a conundrum, sprinkled with mystery. ” — from 1650 Gallery

FISHY

Children often outgrow the dislike of strongly-flavored foods, but I truly just substituted some for others.  I used to love sardines on saltines as a kid, but now you can always anchovy paste in my pantry.  This could be an explanation for why our household is such a hit with all the neighborhood felines, just like this next Call should be.  Take a look…

“Cats. Love ’em or hate ’em, they surround us. They rule our world with a furry sharp-clawed fist. They allow us to live with them as long as we abide by their rules. Step out of line, and you will feel their wrath.  What’s a human to do?”

Do you remember when fast food was a super fast, super cheap option?  If you were on the go or in a hurry, lunch or dinner at a fast food joint wouldn’t break the bank.  Today, my little family of 3 stopped for lunch.  I ordered from the value menu to keep my portion sizes in check.  My two favorite men ordered sandwiches and fries.  The total was about $16.50.  Really? $16.50 for a fast food lunch?  When did this happen?  Clearly, I am out of touch with reality.  This next Call puts 1650 in a much better light.  Don’t miss this…

Check out this Call for Entries from the 1650 Gallery (Los Angeles) for I’ll Be Your Mirror: The Portrait. The entry fee is only $25, and the 1650 Gallery also offer free matting and framing. Take a closer look…

I’ll Be Your Mirror:
The Portrait

Great portraiture such as that produced by Dorothea Lange, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Matthew Brady, Peter Hujar and Diane Arbus comprise one of the main pillars of the Pantheon of photographic arts.

The challenge of capturing the personality behind the person requires both technical know-how and an artist’s eye, combining technique, intuition and empathy. When done right, the unseen power of persona comes into focus and, as if by magic — personality seems to jump from the page. This month 1650 Gallery tips our hat to the power of people pictures, and welcomes your work in the blockbuster genre of photographic portraiture.

ELIGIBILITY: All artists 18 years or older
