There are a few things that I simply can’t feed my friends, in-laws, and co-workers.  If I were to show up at a party with escargot, the rumors of my impending insanity would abound.  In the art world, I have learned that I simply can’t show my work in an area where fine artisan crafts are what sells. Well, this next Call has a juror that I suspect you can’t freak out.  Investigate for yourself…

Check out this Call for Entries for the 2012 International Photo Exhibition from the 12 12 Gallery (Richmond, VA)  This juror is known for his own visually provocative work, and I know I have work I can’t show ANYWHERE that I plan to enter.  How about you?

ELIGIBILITY: Artists around the world age 18+ may submit up to 3 images for consideration.  Additional images may be submitted at an additional cost for up to a total of 5 works. Work previously exhibited at 12 12 Gallery is not eligible.

ENTRY FEE: Each entrant will pay a non-refundable $25 (US) entry fee for 3 images.  Additional images, at $5 (US) each, for up to 5 total images, may be submitted.

JUROR: Ignatius Widiapradja, Associate Professor of Art and Design, has been teaching at Drake University since 1985. He has taught studio courses in Painting, Drawing, 2 Dimensional Design, and Digital Photography and Editing.

In his works, the articulation of images and spatial construction form a cohesive multidimensional reality that exhibits a state of constant flux.

In our memories, images, events, feelings, desire, and space happen simultaneously and are inseparable and intertwined.  Riveting, provocative, and meticulously articulate in their design, Professor Widiapradja’s digital compositions combine artist-captured images that represent landscape, travel, nature, portrait, studio, commercial, and fine art photography.

I just returned from my local apple orchard which also serves as a farmer’s market.  I bought what you would expect: peaches, apples, tomatoes.  But I also came home with patty pan squash.  Some folks call them custard squash, and that should tell you how decadent they taste–out of this world, surreal, defying all logic.  I have to admit that the fact that they are shaped like flying saucers doesn’t hurt their appeal either.  This next Call is looking for your view of the unreal.  Investigate further…

Our dreams combine the ordinary and the seemingly nonsensical, where rules of physics and logic do not apply.  Artists exploring this realm depict remembered fantasies or create new ones from their waking imaginations. Their work is a distortion of reality, making everyday objects and environments alien and magical. In photography, optical illusions and modern digital tools have allowed artists to create new visual worlds that blur the line between the real and fantastic. For The Unreal, The Kiernan Gallery seeks images that explore the surreal and otherworldly.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All photographic media are encouraged.

Learn more about juror Ken Rosenthal at the Kiernan Gallery!JUROR:   Ken Rosenthal received a BA in still photography from the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television, and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1993. His work is represented by KLOMPCHING Gallery, Etherton Gallery, Gerald Peters Gallery, Dolby Chadwick Gallery, and De Santos Gallery. Rosenthal’s photographs are in many public and private collections internationally including but not limited to Southwest and Mexican Photography Collection, which recently established a major collection of his work.

Since 2002 his work has been featured in more than 150 solo and group exhibitions internationally. Recent solo exhibitions have been held at the Griffin Museum of Photography, Centro Cultural Recoleta, El Cabildo de la Ciudad de Cordoba, Espacio Foto, Etherton Gallery, Wall Space Gallery, De Santos Gallery, and KLOMPCHING Gallery. Rosenthal’s first monograph, Ken Rosenthal: Photographs 2001-2009 was released in 2011.

AWARDS: For this exhibition, juror Ken Rosenthal will select up to 30 images for display in the main gallery, and up to an additional 40 to be included in the online gallery. All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced.

SALES: Artists exhibiting at the gallery may offer their work for sale. The Kiernan Gallery retains 30% of the sale price as commission.

Spontaneity is the hallmark for great documentary and street photography where the moments of life, often ironic, poignant, emotionally charged, tragic or absurd are frozen.

Photography provides the means to capture a moment but which moment makes all the difference. Well known masters include Henri Cartier-Bresson and W. Eugene Smith with recent discoveries such as Vivian Maier and Frank Oscar Larson adding to a long list of great photographers.

Many of the scenes captured by practitioners of this art, with the possible exception of war and extreme sports documentary, pass before us every day, but we do not see.

This exhibit is dedicated to those who strive to see, realize and then manifest vision and moment into an image so that we can all see what is right in front of us or inaccessible in some other way.  Showing us the remarkable moments that make up the, often unconscious, Human Experience.

ELIGIBILITY:
Entrants must be at least 18 years old. If you are younger, you must have a parent or legal guardian make the submission for you.

JUROR:  Nikos Economopoulos began his photography career inn 1988 with a long-term project in Greece and Turkey.  He photographed whatever he came across on his daily walks: street scenes, public gatherings, solitary meanderers, or deserted landscapes.

In 1990, Economopoulos’ photographs began to appear in newspapers and magazines worldwide.  In the same year he started to take photographs in Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and the former Yugoslavia, investigating the territorial, ethnic and religious tensions of the region, as well as the endurance of traditional social and religious rites.  This work earned him the Mother Jones Award in 1992.

Subsequent work includes lignite miners and the Muslim minority in Greece, people living along the Green Line dividing southern and northern Cyprus; illegal immigrants at the Greek-Albanian border; and young residents of Tokyo, mass emigration of ethnic Albanians fleeing Kosovo.  He was given the Abdi Ipektsi Award for peace and friendship between Greece and Turkey in 2001.

Learn more about Juror Nikos Economopoulos!Nikos has published ten books and his work is in the permanent collections of Centre Méditerranéen de la Photographie and the Benaki Museum.  He organizes a series of photography workshops in locations in eastern Europe, Asia and Africa.

The term accessories has come to include a host of photographic gadgets of questionable value…“Ansel Adams, The Camera

A good daguerreotype was as perfect a kind of photograph as was ever made.” Edward Steichen

These two masters enriched the history of photography by being some of the first to experiment with new technologies in a relatively new art medium. They were also traditionalists and truly embraced manual and old photography processes. The hundred and fifty photographers from Steichen’s world is millions today, and finding “as perfect a kind of photograph as was ever made” is no longer as simple.

We have dozens of “apps” that help us tweak a digital image to “perfection” in minutes. A vast repertoire of image resources we look to for inspiration and meaning still brings us to the same point of reflection as photographers of the early 20th century: what is the art of photography?

Black and white photography, a genre that many would claim made them fall in love with image-making in the first place, has remained completely relevant and contemporary despite it’s ancient roots. It is timeless, sometimes soft, sometimes dramatic and brings new perspective to images and image making. Whether you are a darkroom purist or a Photoshop craftperson, show us your love for hue-less images. The Darkroom Galllery wants to see YOUR best black and white or alternative process images for an exhibit that will pay tribute to the origins of photography and praise it’s development.

JUROR: Growing up in southern Poland, Rafal Maleszyk spent his childhood and early years in post-communist Poland. He first started exploring photography using a 35mm Kiev on his fourteenth birthday. Maleszyk’s photography is rooted in his interest in natural landscapes. For him, photography is the ultimate artistic form that captures one’s encounter or oneness with nature. His style focuses on simplifying and expressing with intimacy the perspectives in nature.

Learn more about the Darkroom Gallery!In 2009, he moved to the Oahu island of Hawaii, where he now works as a professional fine art black and white landscape photographer, specializing in large format prints series using a digital medium format Hasselblad camera. Maleszyk has received numerous awards for his work.

People tell me the wackiest food facts.  I love hearing them, and I usually assume I am being told the truth.  But, just to be certain, I always verify the facts if I can.  Recently someone told me that the black and white cookie, that I alway think of as German in orgin, IS actually German, but it is called an Amerikaner.  There has to be some cyclical humor in the fact that an American who thought she was a fan of German cookies is really only a fan of cookies that Germans refer to as American cookies.  Funny.  This next call is all about Black and White, too.  Take a look…

Black & White: Absence of Color

The world’s first photographic images were made in shade of gray, black, and white, and the black and white photograph continues to be an important palette for photographers today. The beauty of a well-printed black and white photograph is undeniable—it is striking, unearthly, and can be life changing.

Some of the world’s most memorable photographs are black and white—the rich blacks, glowing whites, and silvery grays of a strong, black and white photograph leave a lasting impression on the mind. For photographers, those deep blacks hold a special significance, as it is the black tones that reveal themselves first in photographic chemistry and communicate the magic, mystery, and possibility of the photographic process.

Black and white photographs can have painterly, etching-like qualities, which were celebrated by photography’s inventors and early adopters. Photography as art was first championed with The Photo-Secessionists who celebrated the pictorial aspect of the black and white image. Today photography is widely accepted as an art form and as a key medium within contemporary and conceptual art.

The choice of using black and white versus color is the photographer’s choice, and the reasons for that choice can be personal, theoretical, or aesthetic. This call for entry—Black and White—The Absence of Color—looks to grays and blacks and whites to tell the story and make the picture that color would often muddy.

JUROR:  Bevin Bering Dubrowski is Executive Director of Houston Center for Photography, a nonprofit organization founded in 1981 offering year-round exhibitions, workshops, publications, outreach programs, lectures, and classes.  HCP’s mission is to increase society’s understanding and appreciation of photography and its evolving role in contemporary culture, and produces 15 – 20 exhibitions annually on and off-site, balancing work by regional and internationally acclaimed emerging, mid-career, and established artists.  Bevin curates exhibition for HCP and is also editor of spot magazine, a bi-annual journal of photography that includes artist portfolios, interviews, exhibition and book excerpts, and highlights on HCP members’ work.

JUROR:  The juror  for “I-mag-i-na-tion” will be Aline Smithson.   After a career as a New York Fashion Editor and working along side the greats of fashion photography, Aline discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries in the U.S. and Europe and published throughout the world, Aline continues to create her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including a recent cover of PDN, the PDN Photo Annual, Communication Arts Photo Annual, Eyemazing, and others.  She has exhibited widely.  Aline writes and edits the blogzine, Lenscratch, has been the Gallery Editor for Light Leaks Magazine, a contributing writer for Diffusion ,Too Much Chocolate, Lucida, and F Stop Magazines, and has been curating exhibitions for a number of galleries and on-line magazines.  Though she was nominated for The Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award in 2008, 2009, and 2010 and for The Santa Fe Prize in Photography in 2009 by Center, she considers her children her greatest achievement.

AWARDS:  Cash prizes of $250 each will be awarded for The Juror’s Award and The Director’s Award, along with a $100 prize for the Visitors’ Choice Award.  There will also be five Honorable Mentions.

Earthy foods are yummy.  I know that is obvious to many of you.  But, I have to say that learning to appreciate earthy foods is the biggest change in my palate over the years.  I’m still not a fan of what I call “dirt crackers.”  I DO have my earthy limits, but I am in love with whole grains, whole foods, in fact.  And the earthiness of merlot doesn’t exactly hurt my feelings.  Food should taste like itself, not the over-refined, processed version of itself that is so cheaply and readily available these days.  This next show wants to see earthy through your eyes.  Interesting…

Earth Through a Lens (ETAL) is pleased to announce its third annual photo competition and display focused on promoting a sustainable environment.  Photographers living in North America are invited to submit up to 3 cell phone derived images or up to 4 digital images produced by a camera.  Photos should be of the natural environment and/or human impact on the environment.

ELIGIBILITY:
Artists living in North America.

MEDIA:  Photography

DEADLINE:  January 6, 2012

NOTIFICATION:  February 6, 2012

See the ETAL winners for 2011!ENTRY FEE: Entry fee is $35 for the first camera image and $10 for each additional image.  Please check www.callforentry.org for possible discount coupons. Entry fee is $10 per cell  image using the coupon “CELL” available on the checkout page at www.callforentry.org.

JUROR:  Camera Work – A professional jury will select 30 – 50 images for public exhibition at the Rancho Mirage Public Library from April 1 – June 30, 2012 and electronically at the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) in San Diego for 1 month.  Judging is conducted anonymously.  All cell phone images will be accepted into a Power Point presentation to be shown on Earth Day.

AWARDS:  Camera Work – Cash prizes ranging from $500 – $1,000 will be awarded.  The top three print images will be published in the April issue of Palm Springs Life magazine.  All of the finalists will have their photographs published in the ETAL2012 catalog.  Cell Work – All cell phone images will be accepted into a Power Point presentation to be shown on Earth Day.  Audience favorites will be selected and prizes up to $300 will be awarded.

JUROR:  Kim Hubbard is a senior photo editor for National Geographic magazine where she works primarily on natural history and environmental stories. Prior to that she was the photo editor of Audubon magazine for 11 years.

Wendy Erickson, editor of Photo Technique Magazine,   is a New Jersey based photographer, writer and teacher. She seamlessly blends together traditional and digital imaging, and uses both in her art. Her photographs and writings have been widely exhibited, and published in numerous books and articles.

Stephen Weaver is an award winning photographer with over 35 years experience making images of the natural world. Formally educated as a geologist, Steve combines his scientific knowledge with his photographic abilities to produce stunning images that illustrate the beauty of the structure and composition of the earth and its natural systems.

AWARDS:  Best of Show will win a $500 grand prize.

JUROR:  Photographer Jeff Curto is Professor of Photography at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, where he has taught since 1984.  He was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Bennington College in Vermont.  He attended Ansel Adams’ last workshop in Carmel, California in 1983.  Curto hosts two popular podcasts on photography, one that records his History of Photography lectures from College of DuPage and another that discusses photography’s creative aspects.

Catania, Sicilia, 2002 by Juror Jeff CurtoA portfolio of Curto’s photographs of Italy was published in LensWork magazine in the spring of 2005 and an editioned LensWork Folio was produced in 2009. His work is held in numerous private and corporate collections. In addition to teaching and producing fine art photography, Curto has specialized in event and public relations photography, architectural interiors and exteriors, portrait, and product photography. He is on the board of the Society for Photographic Education.

AWARDS:  The juror will select 40 photographs for the Exhibition. The decision of the juror is final. $6,000 (USD) in awards will be granted as follows:  1st Place $3,000, 2nd Place $2,000 and 3rd Place $1,000.

SALES:  All work in the Exhibition will be offered for sale.  Gallery Photographica retains a 40% commission on sold works.
