CALL for ENTRIES: Relationship

Learn more about the Relationship exhibit from LA Photo Curator!

CHEESE glorious cheese

I still get email about my relationship with food.  A number of my friends & peers are vegan and are bothered by my cheese obsession.  I dare say the majority of the people I know are vegetarian; therefore, any mention of meat ends in a little hate mail from frenemies.  And I still regularly get the “why do you write about food” question even though we’ve been at it for almost 10 years now.  I am surprised EVERY time.  I forget people read what I write, ha.  This next Call wants to know about your relationship to anything you care to share.  How will you answer this Call?

Check out this Call from L.A. Photo Curator (online) for the Relationship exhibit. $20 entry, no shipping, plus art publication for ALL entrants.   $20 entry and a curatorial them to which everyone can relate.  Take a look…

FRUIT bowl

My husband has been throwing new bowls for me. (He’s a commercial potter.) I now have bowls of fruit and yarn and onions and paper clips.  Because I can’t decide on a glaze color, he keeps throwing while I cannot part with any of them.  Now it appears that all things in my house have to be stored in bowls.  I’m am currently rationalizing it as a study in perpetual still life.  This next Call encourages a far broader interpretation of still life than fruit in a bowl.  Send them your best…

THEME:  Still Life 2.0. “From the Greco-Roman art, mostly depicting offerings for the gods, to the Dutch masters of the 16th and 17th centuries, to the vanitas and, later on, to impressionism and cubism, still lifes have always been providing keys to understanding cultures of different eras and regions, as well as the psyche of each individual artist. Forget about fruits and flowers or bowls and skulls. Or not. Introduce us to your world by arranging and displaying your updated version of still life. Invite us into your fears, desires, dreams and attachments. just NUTS

I shop from a half-dozen grocery stores. Because all but one is out of town, my menu is often reflected in my travels for the week.  Thai food only shows up on the table when I make it 30 miles out to get natural peanut butter.  I mean, the local grocer has something called “natural”, but I think we can agree that just because something CAN be eaten doesn’t mean it SHOULD be eaten –natural or not.  However, I do love the junky peanut butter cereal available everywhere that is neither natural nor contains actual peanut butter.  Hi, my name is Rachel, and I’m a food snob hypocrite.  It’s complicated.  This next Call is all about our relationship to the natural world.  I can’t wait to see this one…

These are signposts for a hopeless future for our planet, and it’s our responsibility as artists to call attention to, and alter, this course.  Please submit images that address the connection and interdependence between humans and the natural world. I’m still eating local greens even though it is almost November.  Pressure-cooked mustard & collard greens served with a dash of vinegary hot sauce is a rite of passage in the South.  You aren’t really an adult if you don’t love cooked greens, but I’ve never had a taste for anything except creamed spinach, making me feel like the hometown heel.  But, I am newly-enamored of raw greens.  Everyone yearns for Spring lettuce, but my Fall salads of peppery mustard greens highlight my recent menus–still available locally, and they last forever.  What reminds you of your hometown? We always end up eating eggs for breakfast.  I am so bored with eggs.  Because I try to avoid single-use appliances, I didn’t own a waffle iron until I inherited one second-hand from my mother-in-law last week.  We’ve had waffles 4 times in the last 7 days.  My husband asked, “Don’t you want something different?”   I explained that appearance of something 4 times in our nearly 20 years together still qualifies as something different even if the 4 times were all in one week.  The award for best waffles EVER goes to this morning’s blueberry bacon maple variety.  He deserves a cash award, really.  This next Call comes with cash awards but no blueberry waffles.  It is still worth a look though…

As linear foods go, I make a mean grilled eggplant lasagna.  I don’t usually fall for the layered foods like 7-layer dips and trifles, but lasagna is the exception.  Most people are replacing the meat when they use eggplant in lasagna, I’m really replacing the noodles.  While I can find wheat-less pasta of most types, lasagna noodles have eluded me.  So, eggplant makes a gorgeous replacement.  I make it in a glass plan just to get the composition perfect.  Ridiculous.  This next Call is a far better use of a line obsession.  Take a look…

Lines are powerful compositional elements that control the way eyes move through an image. The effect that lines have on an image varies. Horizontal lines convey a sense of width, stability, calm, lazy, security, relaxation, constancy and timelessness. FOR YOU

Why is mint chocolate chip ice cream so often green?  We know that the essential oils used to produce the mint flavor certainly doesn’t lend the color.  Is it the manufacturer’s way of grabbing the attention of someone already searching for the flavor?  Does green food say “mint” to you?  Green foods say “grassy” or “produce” to me.  There is no denying that food imagery helps determine choice, and this next Call drives home that point precisely.  Can’t wait to see your entries…

Feast

Feast your eyes & dig in. The taste of food photography.

From farm to table; the harvesting, preparing and plating of culinary masterpieces.  Food, we eat it to survive.  Yet if grown and prepared with intention, these are the dishes we savor.

Cooking can be a lot like taking a great photograph.  Both lend themselves to fearless experimentation, adaptation and, ultimately, the creation of something awe-inspiring.

Photography capturing this process is something that all walks of life can connect to and be stirred by.  The act of breaking bread with one another is deeply ingrained in our many traditions and ancestry.
