Did you know orchids are edible?  Many of you have probably seen the sugared variety high atop a wedding cake or as a garnish, but they’re great in salads too.  The flavor is a bit like cucumber with the texture of a buttery lettuce and a touch of the bitter bite of endive.  Don’t eat orchids given to you as gifts.  If they weren’t grown by you, please be sure you only eat certified organic orchids.  The use of pesticides is prevalent in commercially farmed ornamental plants; so, be careful.  This next Call can center on orchids.  It is all up to you…

“The gallery exhibit De La Naturaleza coincides with the Conservatory’s Orchids exhibition, an annual horticulture display that celebrates the beauty and form of the orchid bloom. As the largest family of flowering plants, orchids are a stunning example of the innate tenacity of life. More than 30,000 known species of orchids exist in the wild, with each species possessing distinctive adaptations that have ensured their survival in an ever-changing environment.”

ELIGIBILITY:  Open to all artists age 18+

MEDIA:  Ceramics.  All work entered must be at least 60% ceramic & cannot exceed 6’ x 6’ x 6’.

THEME:  The concept of human balance w/ nature, orchids, or nature in general.

DEADLINE:  October 5, 2015

NOTIFICATION:  October 12, 2015

JUROR: Sherrie Riley Hawk graduated from Ohio State University with a BS in Accounting & minor degree in Art History.  She opened the Riley Hawk Gallery in 1986 specializing in Glass Art.  In 2004, Hawk decided to embrace all 3-dimensional art forms & opened a new gallery to exhibit ceramics, wood, fiber & art jewelry.  Sherrie Gallerie has participated in nat’l exhibitions throughout the country.  Hawk has been invited to jury countless museum exhibitions and art fairs.  Sherrie Gallerie mounts at least 10 solo shows a year and is committed to representing the best artists in their fields.

AWARDS:  All work selected by the Juror and Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens will be included in the Cardinal Health Gallery.  Artists will be invited to an Artist Reception.  A cash prize of $500 will be awarded to the artist whose work is selected as “Best in Show”, and two “Honorable Mention” prizes will be awarded with a cash prize of $250.

SALES:  Any artwork sold is subject to a 40% commission.
