CALL for ENTRIES: Figureworks 2019

LETTUCE celebrate

I have been on a cold food kick lately.  I am still successfully using a food subscription service (not a paid or affiliate ad) to help streamline foodstuffs during my studio time, and many of my options are optimally served cold or room temp.  I’m digging it.  I don’t know how I will feel when the weather is colder, but for now, I’m enjoying the change.

On the art front, I am contemplating more change.  I have done figurative work, well, always.  I’ve done non-figurative work, but I’m always lured back.  I am contemplating a longer detour, but I don’t know.  In the meantime, while I’m still producing this work, I have wanted to enter this next competition for years.  Maybe this is the year.  What do you think?

Check out this Call for Entries from Figureworks (Ottawa, Canada) for the 10th Annual Juried Prize.  $35 Entry, no commission & cash awards.  Another international exhibit opportunity…

under PRESSURE

So, I’m selling my electric pressure cooker.  I got one as a gift a couple of years ago, hesitantly, and thought I would love it.  Not so much.  I tried joining an online community. Didn’t help.  It became a very heavy glorified rice cooker, and today it goes away.  (shoutout to Facebook Marketplace)  This is all a part of the new, lighter, more portable, healthier me.  I don’t mean physically, although the Instant Pot IS ridiculously heavy; I mean that I am trying to lighten my load and remember to repurpose or pass along things I no longer need.

I’ve had my eye on the venue for this next Call for a while.  As much as I appreciate the modern box gallery, I have a special love for spaces repurposed as galleries.  In this case, the gallery is located in what used to be an old courthouse.  The variance in the spaces allows curators and jurors to cater the work to the environment.  I like it.  This Call comes from a publicly-funded arts council in a publicly funded space.  I also like that.  Take a look and let me know if you enter & how your experience is.  I’m going to try to get my act together and submit.

Check out this Call for Entries from Northwest Area Arts Council for Real People 2019 at the Old Court House Arts Center (Woodstock, IL).  $40 entry fee & 30% commission.  Do you have figurative work to show?

ARTIST of the DAY: Jylian Gustlin

abstract math PORTRAIT

I have a well-known soft spot for portraiture.  A significant part of my own work has revolved around facial expression, but abstract art calls to me.  I buy abstract work.  I find that my interpretation and feelings about this work evolves as my time with it increases.  I am always delighted to find a marriage of the abstract and the figurative. Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Jylian Gustlin gives me just that marriage. (continues below)

You know that game you play at the airport when you’re bored where you try to tell the story of a complete strangers life as they walk by you on their way to baggage claim or ticketing?  Today’s Artist of the Day , Stacey Page, has found a way to tell the story of random, discard portraits of the people someone loves.    (continues below)

As an artist, I am inexplicably drawn to boxes and bins of photos at thrift stores and antique shops.  I always wonder how they got there, who they were, what they meant to the world. But textile artist Stacey Page already KNOWS.  She has discovered their inner demons, secret fantasies, heights & depths –in embroidery floss.  I couldn’t be happier to share her work with you.

My kid loves quiche.  He requests it for every special occasion–from birthdays to graduations.  The secret is 6 eggs to 2 cups of heavy whipping cream for a deep dish, and don’t talk to me about the fat.  Really.  He rarely cares what’s in it, but when I’m looking for brownie points, I throw in bacon and/or pepperoni.  I do it for the look on his face.  How strange it is to see him look lovingly at a brunch food.  This next Call is looking for your strange figurations–and not just the faces.  Take a look…

I’ve always played with my food.  As a small kid, I loved making faces, and as a teenager, mashed potatoes and gravy just screamed for a castle and moat.  As an adult, my child is only mildly amused by smiley face pancakes and strange hair formed in syrup.  This next Call wants to see your strange figures, but I don’t think they’re looking for food art.  You be the judge…

I am guilty of making the occasional sauce to cover up an over-cooked piece of meat. Yes, I know that any meat that NEEDS sauce shouldn’t be served, but it happens.  However, the best things to eat are usually at their prime when featured naked.  The pluot is a perfect example.  It is a cross between a plum and an apricot. They are the blood orange of the plum world according to my hubby and best served nekkid.  This next call also wants to see the naked truth of it all.  Investigate…

CALL for ENTRIES: Figuratively Speaking

Click to Subscribe to www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com by Email!SWEET & SOUR

As I frequently shout from the mountain top, I love portraiture.  I love faces, specifically.  But when I began my Psychomachia project with Arizona artist Jerry Portelli, he challenged me to limit my use of faces and to concentrate on other figurative depictions.  The process started on a sour note but has ended up pretty sweet…a lemon drop, if you will.

Maybe “Figuratively Speaking,” the National Call for Entries from the Emerging Young Artist (EYA) Organization and the Village Gallery in Montgomery, AL, will be your lemon drop, too.  The entry fee is a reasonable $35, and the Best of Show winner will get a solo show at the Village Gallery.  You know you want the show…so go for it.

National Juried Call for Entries: Figuratively Speaking

“Figuratively Speaking” is not limited to the traditional/contemporary aspects of the human forms, conditions, interactions, and abstractions of the human body. “Figuratively Speaking” includes figuration in contemporary design in terms of shapes, lines, and colors.
