CALL for ENTRIES: Madness

Learn more about the Digital and Collage Madness exhibit from the Las Laguna Gallery!patchwork PROVISIONS

The weirdness of my lunch is directly proportional to how badly I don’t want to go to the grocery store.  I spend most of my working hours in my home office/studio.  As a result, my work clothing standards are sometimes (often) not how I’d like to be seen in public.  So to avoid the extra work of dressing and driving and shopping, I create food collages of sorts –often disparate ingredients composed into pasta salads, casseroles & almost anything sauteed & stuffed into a corn tortilla.  This next Call is for traditional & digital collages; I don’t think food collage counts.  Take a look…

ARTIST of the DAY: Liz Ruest

"Coordinated Drift" (digital collage, 61 layers) by Liz Ruest
“Coordinated Drift” (digital collage, 61 layers) by Liz Ruest

“In the desire to find the new, do we also mourn the old,
the left-behind places?”

For years I have been trying to find the balance between the whirlwind of excitement that comes with every new milestone in my job with the desire to be still and quiet and ponder.  For me it is the balance between ‘busy’ and ‘creative’.  As grateful as I am to have the opportunity to work a non-traditional job as a performing artist, I miss the creative freedom to produce all of the visual work that consumes my quieter hours.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Liz Ruest, captures that struggle for me.  Can we move forward while looking backward?

ARTIST of the DAY: Liz Huston

creative ISOLATION

As the new year approaches, I find myself more isolated and in my head as I set goals for the year and contemplate creative direction. Today’s Artist of the Day, Liz Huston captured my inner dialogue with storytellers of her very own.  The pieces below that spoke to me are from a couple of years ago.  But please take the opportunity to look at her new work and find your own story. (continues below)

The Dreamkeepers (left) & Creative Isolation and the Map of Authenticity (right) by Liz Huston!

“I am fascinated with the way memory influences how stories change and evolve over time.  This happens not because the facts change, but because the inner orientation of the storyteller has. Their perspective grows; expanding and contracting with experience. The storyteller journeys us deep into the timeless aspects of the human experience; the kingdoms of love and loss, through grief, resolve, growth and into the balance of purpose… This time traveler, this storyteller, unites the treads of time–leading us home, bringing us back into ourselves.” Liz Huston

It is finally warm enough to be seeing a few normal tomatoes at the market.  I have suffered through a winter FULL of day-glow tomatoes that are hard as rocks and completely tasteless.  I think out-of-season growers spray them with something to make them have an appealing color, but they just end up disappointing when I get them home.  Do not disappoint the purveyors of this Next Call with a lack of color.  Investigate…

Check out this Call for Entries from Digital Arts: California for True Colors 2 for digital work of any variety. The entry fee is very reasonable, and even if you don’t make it to the exhibit, you could end up in the online gallery. Take a look…

…and say “Ahhh”

Food TV rocks.  Surprised that I would say so?  I didn’t think you would be, ha.  I like to believe I am wide open to any kind of food (and art) that comes my way, but watching shows like Chopped reminds me that my palate isn’t really challenged all that often.  This next call challenges you to be wide open to digital art.  Give ’em your best shot…

I love food fusion. I’ve eaten in some crazy creations from Tex-Mex crossed with Filipino food to Cajun food crossed with Asian food. Recently I had Rueben eggrolls. Delicious. Not everyone embraces the new of it all. Digital art is like food fusion… not everyone loves it. This call gives you a great chance to participate in a digital show, and it just happens to be in Berlin. Bonus…

Check out this Call for Entries for Digital Unity sponsored by ANNEX:art and Förderkreis Dorfkirche Lübzow. The entry fee is a standard $35 (approximately), and it could get you an international show! This is not an online show…

Artist submissions are open to digital photography, digital audio installation, digital collage, digital painting and digital video clips. Each entry will be evaluated on its own merit with respect to inclusion in the final digital installation.
