for dinner

As linear foods go, I make a mean grilled eggplant lasagna.  I don’t usually fall for the layered foods like 7-layer dips and trifles, but lasagna is the exception.  Most people are replacing the meat when they use eggplant in lasagna, I’m really replacing the noodles.  While I can find wheat-less pasta of most types, lasagna noodles have eluded me.  So, eggplant makes a gorgeous replacement.  I make it in a glass plan just to get the composition perfect.  Ridiculous.  This next Call is a far better use of a line obsession.  Take a look…

Lines are powerful compositional elements that control the way eyes move through an image. The effect that lines have on an image varies. Horizontal lines convey a sense of width, stability, calm, lazy, security, relaxation, constancy and timelessness. Whereas vertical lines convey a sense of strength, height, integrity, solidity, dominance, power, peace & tranquility, substance or permanence.  This Call is for images that utilize lines in innovative and dynamic ways. — from darkroomgallery.com

FROZEN?

To freeze or not to freeze– THAT is the question.  I tend to cook in large quantities.  I do it on purpose to provide additional dinners, but mostly lunches, with the same amount of effort it took to make dinner.  The problem is that not all food freezes well.  Chili is great reheated after being frozen for a week, but potato soup becomes paste after only a day in the freezer.  Casseroles take on a luscious, unctuous quality while mushrooms turn to rubber.  This next Call want you to freeze TIME, for better or for worse.  Brilliant.  Are you up for the challenge?

I am proud that we cook most of our meals at home; however, I feel compelled to be honest.  I live in a delivery wasteland.  I live in a town where the only thing you can get delivered is pizza.  If my local smoked brisket purveyor had wheels, we’d all be in trouble.  Here’s a call all about wheels.  Get a move on…

Learn more about the Wheels exhibit from the Darkroom Gallery!CALL for ENTRIES: Wheels

Next to the discovery of fire, the invention of the wheel has been the most significant achievement in the development of human culture and civilization.

The  horse drawn chariot revolutionized warfare, while the stone wheel of  the gristmill made it possible to process enough grain to feed  increasing numbers of city dwellers, and the oxcart provided  transportation for people and produce.  In the modern era, life would be  unimaginable without wheels.  America is truly a “car culture”. The rest of the world is not far behind.

How  do you envision wheels in your own life? Maybe you’re a car nut, a  lover of anything that looks sleek and goes fast, from a Grand Prix car  to a NASCAR racer, to a land speed record vehicle.  Or perhaps you’re  more aware of other types of wheels, such as those on bicycles, baby  carriages, or trains.  And then there are Ferris wheels and pinwheels,  skateboards and rollerblades.  Conveyer belts and steamboats. The  possibilities are nearly limitless. — from darkroomgallery.com

I have an aversion to blue foods.  Blueberries & blue potatoes are really both fairly purple.  Every other blue food I can think of is artificial and always screams, “bio-hazard” at me like blue drinks, candies and frosting.  But have you every noticed if you go to a carnival, 5 out of 6 kids have blue rings around their mouths or blue tongues from shaved ice or cotton candy or gummy worms?  Is it an age thing?  I don’t know.  Just don’t try to feed me your entry for this next show and we’ll be all good.  Take a look…

Learn more about the Blue exhibit from the Darkroom Gallery!CALL for ENTRIES: Blue

Blue is a favorite color of all people, yet it has more complex and contradictory meanings than any other hue.

Throughout the ages, as the natural world’s color for water and sky, blue lends itself to spiritual and heavenly leanings.  In these modern days, blue is embraced as the color of heaven and authority, denim jeans and corporate logos.  Most blues convey a sense of trust, loyalty, cleanliness, and understanding. On the other hand, blue evolved as symbol of depression in American culture. “Singing the blues” and feeling blue” are good examples of the complexity of color symbolism and how the color has been evolved in different cultures.

For this show Darkroom Gallery is looking for all types of blue images & meanings. All the variances of the color: electric, royal, baby, periwinkle, azure, midnight, navy, dark and light.  We are intrigued by naturally occurring blues and man-made blues alike. Whole images consisting of the color, or the choice sections of a photograph that astutely display the power of blue. — from darkroomgallery.com

Work by Juror George Awde!CALL for ENTRIES: XY

Photographs of the strengths and virtues of masculinity coupled with the Achilles’ heel of meeting these stereotypes.

Do all men have power? Do all men want power? Is masculinity the same in every culture and time period? Does the performance of masculinity depend on the categories of race, class, and sexuality? The answer to the first three questions is a resounding no, while the answer both to the fourth one is a clear yes.

Darkroom Gallery is calling for photographs that explore the field of cultural, social, historical, political, psychological, economic, and artistic constructions of masculinity.  What makes something or someone “male”?  These definitions change with communities across the world and throughout history. There is a tense and complex relationship between hegemonic masculinities & subordinate masculinities.  Throughout history, men have paid a steep price for not adhering to, or consciously resisting, stereotypical masculine models.  Let’s remember sex and gender are separate entities.

Learn more about the Darkroom Gallery online!Wanted are images interrogating these male ideals: photographs of warriors, fathers, of wimps and muscle men. Little boys can be “snakes and snails and puppy dog tails” but they can also love the color pink. Inanimate objects can imply such meanings. In the wake of patriarchal fanfare show us the vulnerability, gentleness and supple subtleties behind what is means to inhibit/exhibit being “male”. — from darkroomgallery.com

Hue

Color in photography has symbolism and meaning that travels beyond what you see.

More than the combination of red, green, and blue or cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, color is a visual tool for non-verbal communication: a viewer’s perception and connection to an image can be significantly enhanced by a certain hue.

Strip away the subject matter from a photograph, and what is left behind? Two things. The underlying geometry of the photo, its composition or balance, and the color.  The design and geometry make an image coalesce, become solid, and enduring. Whereas the color carries the opposite message, one of transience and impermanence. That’s because colors are not inherent in objects, but change  and evolve with the changing light – and we photographers know, light is always changing.

Learn more about the Darkroom Gallery online!Hues must contrast or complement one another to create a successful image, a delicate dance of visual balance. For this exhibit we are looking for works that exemplify the innate power of color.  Images that drive us through hue to an emotive response.
