CALL for ENTRIES: Altered State

Learn more about the Altered States of Collage exhibit from the Collage Artists of America!INGREDIENTS a-go-go

It is casserole week at my house.  Every once in a while we spend a day assembling casseroles.  I don’t know why people consider them “easy” meals because they take excessive amounts of time, prep and organization, but I do find them convenient to have around once they are pre-prepared on a week I need free time at the end of the day.  Plus, when we have a bevy of rapidly ripening food from our local farmers market, casseroles offer an excellent long-term storage option via the freezer.  But the best part of making casseroles are the ingredients.  Like many of you, I am guilty of getting into a rut of one protein and two vegetable for meals; however, casseroles are a collage of sometimes a dozen or more ingredients.  The combination of ingredients makes for a special treat –like this next collage call.  Don’t miss this one…

ARTIST of the DAY: Julia Geiser

smoke & mirrors

Some days, one has to put one foot in front of the other and simply hope for the best.  When searching for today’s Artist of the Day for AAAD, I stumbled on to the work of Julia Geiser.  This work perfectly illustrates my week.  (continues below)

“When I first started to work with collage (in 2012) I really got attached to the method. With collage I am allowed to work fast and the pictures I create are more likely a sketch of an idea then an in all details finished picture. I only use pictures from the Internet. So the online-voyeurism becomes an inspiration to me. In such a way my work grasps a larger ground. It becomes a debate about rights and licenses, about privacy and commons, about ownership and laws. The collages always oscillate between visual and legal borders.” Julia Geiser

SUNDAY
fare

I prefer thought-out, composed meals with true intention.  But, let’s face it…that doesn’t always happen.  Today, my lunch included two olive & cream cheese stuffed pieces of celery, a deviled egg, a pickled beet, two slices of fresh tomato and two pickles. The only thing composed was the beautiful square plate.  Truly, it was a collage of anything I could find that didn’t have to be cooked.  This next Call wants your collage, AND they want it square.  Whatcha think about that?

PIECES

If I had to give my cooking an art style, it would probably be collage.  I used to be a purist, a menu maker, a list writer.  Somewhere along the way I began the little-bit-of-this-little-bit-of-that method.  Dinner is now determined on whichever protein I thought to thaw out and whichever veggies were freshest, in-season and/or on sale.  When I try to make a plan, it never fails that whatever I had planned ends up not sounding like what I really want.  So, collage dinners are what we do now; it works for us.  This next Call is also about collage.  I like this one; take a look for yourself…

Editor’s note: This was sent to me under the subject line of “Mail Art”; however, I think this is more-accurately an all-hung collage exhibit, but because the expectation is that the majority of exhibitors will be from outside Ukraine, it is being dubbed a Mail Art show.  I couldn’t find anything that indicated a postmark requirement or address requirement.

FREAKY & FRUITY

With rare exception, I am not a fan of fruit and meat combinations.  Keep your pineapple off my pizza and out of my stirfry.  Lemons and limes are acceptable, and figs and plums are only allowed in Mediterranean food.  While I don’t care to mix my food groups sometimes, mixed media in artwork is a different story.  This Call gives you an opportunity to show your best mixed media work (or collage and digital).  Don’t miss this opportunity for artist representation too!
