CALL for ENTRIES: No Big Heads 2019

Learn more about the No Big Heads Call from the Hugh McPeck Gallery at University of Alaska Anchorage!

hugs & QUICHES

I make the best quiche in the world. Not hyperbole. (The quiche pictured here is not of my making.) You can say what you want, but I will not be dissuaded, ha.  It is NOT, if fact, what I was hoping for as a supper super power, but it is what I got.  My husband has decided that I am allowed to have a big head regarding this one topic; however, I suspect he’s just humoring me for fear his quiche connection will dry up before he learns my secret techniques and/or ingredients.  Bwahahahaha.

This next Call indicates No Big Heads.  Do I still qualify?  Just kidding.  I like this next Call because it ticks off a lot of great mileposts for many of us.  It is an academic show, a resume builder, and it is in Alaska, a state missing on many of our resumes.  The submission size is limited to 12″ or smaller in any direction, so shipping is cheap & easy, AND there are cash prizes.

Check out this Call for Entries from University of Alaska Hugh McPeck Gallery (Anchorage, AK) for 34th Annual No Big Heads Exhibit. $25 entry, 10% commission & cash awards too.  This is open media self-portraiture, so if you’ve got work to offer, investigate this opportunity!

FLAVOR bombs

I’ve never been a fan of frozen green veggies.  The flavor often reminds me of those little peas in one-dollar pot pies, not entirely natural.  But there is a glaring exception.  Edamame.  I love those little beans.  I like them steamed in their pods, then dipped in a little dumpling sauce (thai chili paste & soy) then sucked from their little green shells.  It isn’t pretty, but I am hooked.

Another perienniel favorite that is all about the color is the BWAC color show.  This is a great space that has grown to become Brooklyn’s largest artist-run organization with over 250 members.  Your dollars have power; spend them wisely.  I love this organization & its mission.

So take a minute and check out this Call for Entries from Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (Brooklyn, NY) for Color. This is a great venue…

CALL for ENTRIES: The Bicycle 2019

Learn more about the 2019 Bicycle Call from Theatre Art Galleries!

FOOD to go

I have a friend that is a competitive cyclist and one that owns a coffee cart that is powered by custom-built tricycles, meanwhile I can’t ride a bike or a trike, or at least I don’t think so.  It has been a long time since I tried.  My friend that rides long distances carries a small pack with water and snacks. I picked up the protein bars she recommended, assuming they would be of questionable taste and that the lack of TASTE would prevent me from eating them like candy bars.  FAIL.  They taste like coconut cookies — delicious.  Ahhh.  I’m trying to forgive her, ha.

Today’s call is all about the bicycle.  I exhibited in this show last year, and the venue is beautiful.  My interpretation of bicycle was NOT literal, so I was pleased to receive an acceptance letter.  My work did not sell, but the returned work was well-packed and received in an appropriate amount of time.  The entry fee is low; there are cash awards, and the commission is standard.  I may enter again this year.  How about you?

Check out this Call for Entries from Theatre Art Galleries -TAG (High Point, NC) for The Bicycle: Art Meets Form.  $20 Entry, 40% commission & cash awards.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Content Matters

Learn more about the Content Matters Call from Marin MOCA

SPRING greens

It is time for my seasonal obsession with ginger. I love ginger all of the time; however, about 4 to 6 weeks at the beginning of Spring, I am obsessed.  I find ways to work it into every salad, entree & dessert.  My family just smiles & nods, knowing that the ship will right itself soon.  I think it happens because the weather has just warmed up enought to inspire thoughts of light and fresh fare, but our local harvest hasn’t quite made it to summertime bounty yet.  High-quality ginger is available year ’round, and content matters.

This next Call has a deadline just around the corner (sorry for that), and it meets my resume criteria for this year (museums, publicly-funded galleries, collections or libraries).  But the theme of “Content Matters” is what really pushed me to want to enter — achingly relevant. I am finishing a piece now that I think would be perfect, but, you know… jurors.  We’ll see.  If you are interested in a museum show and have work to offer, take a look at the details.

Check out this Call for Entries from Marin Museum of Contemporary Art (Novato, CA) for Content Matters.  $35 entry, 40% commission.  Delivery is nearly a month after notification, making shipping easier. Take a look…

celebratory EDIBLES

Do you make food resolutions?  No, I don’t mean diets.  Do you make promises to eat healthier or cleaner?  Or maybe to cut some food that makes you itchy, grouchy or gas-y?  Yeah, me neither.  Not anymore.  My eating habits go with the flow.  I eat a lot of whole, fresh foods, punctuated by occasional, terribly-crappy junk food, and it seems to work for me, ha.  This year, I am resolved to drink more bubbly.  I love Prosecco.  I like the sense of celebration, and I want to spend more time celebrating the little stuff.  What is your go-to drinkable or edible celebratory treat?  Chocolate? Guac?  Join me for my year of Yay!  We deserve it.

My last major change was the abandoning of all dairy except whole milk options, and a complete, mid-career left turn in mediaYikes.  Until my change of media a couple of years ago, I was working, almost exclusively, as a xerographist.  There is no Xerography Association, locally, nationally or internationally, to my knowledge.  So, I never had the ability to take advantage of media-specific membership.  Now that I am a watercolorist, I have more options.  However, because I embroider over my paintings, my work is typically considered mixed media by painters and painting by fiber artists.  I’m not sure if I’ll ever find a watercolor or fiber art society to call home.  Do you have a media association that you love?

One of the benefits of association shows is the prestige.  Because they are almost always juried by working master artists, the recognition of your work is meant to be a stamp of approval on your dedication to developing your skills, plus, they often have large cash prizes.  There are frequently multiple show opportunities throughout the year as well as educational & critique options that can’t be found anywhere else.  THOSE are all great arguments for the next Call, but I’m not an oil painter.  If you are, this is a great show.

Check out this Call for Entries for the 28th Annual Nat’l Exhibition from Oil Painters of America to be exhibited at the Illume Gallery of Fine Art (Saint George, UT).  $100,000 in awards including $25K Best of Show.  Don’t wait…

BREAKFAST eggspert

I miss breakfast.  I have been complaining about being sick of eggs for 10 years, but I’d give anything for an egg sandwich right now.  My residency provides the basics so that we can make our own breakfast –eggs, bread, butter, yogurt, granola.  But, you know what happens when a chef prepares every lunch & dinner you eat?  In my case, I’ve become too lazy to make my own breakfast outside a bowl of granola. *sigh*  This next Call if for your impressions of the light of day… not necessarily what you eat a dawn, ha.  Take a look.
