CALL for ENTRIES: Harrow

Learn more about the Harrow Issue from Up the Staircase Quarterly!

ORANGE you glad?

I’m going to have orange elbows any day now.  I have been craving and eating carrots daily.  In my area, they are usually around a dollar a pound for full size organics and make great chips for hummus, a great boost to Indian dishes, beautiful color in Buddha bowls.  When my son was learning to eat real food, he preferred anything sweet or starchy, naturally, with a preference for carrots and sweet potatoes.  His hands, feet, knees and elbows stayed a hilarious color of orange for a few weeks.  I expect mine to turn any day now, ha.

Continuing with this week’s publication theme, I want to introduce you to Up the Staircase Quarterly if you’ve not yet had the privilege.  Established in 2008, Up the Staircase Quarterly is an online journal of poetry, art, interviews, and reviews. New issues are published every February, May, August & November, unless otherwise stated. And for some of you that write poetry in addition to visual work, UtSQ nominates for the Pushcart, Best of the Net, and Best New Poets

They have a 10+ year history and a detailed Masthead for you to research.  So, check out this Call for Entries from Up the Staircase Quarterly (online pubication) for Harrow.  There is no entry fee, but also no payment. Do you have suitable work?

CALL for ENTRIES: Fantastic Fibers 2019

Learn more about the Fantastic Fibers 2019 exhibit from Yeiser Art Center in Paducah, Kentucky! I YAM what I yam

I make fantastic mashed potatoes.  No, really, I do.  My husband wants to know why I refuse to share my technique, but he secretly suspects it is the volume of butter involved.  I can neither confirm or deny.  My favorites to mash are these tiny little orange sweets I get from Aldi.  I bake them (that’s the real secret) before adding butter & other goodies.  I prefer to puree them in my food processor, but I am usually too lazy to wash it afterwards, so I whip them with my hand mixer instead.  Whatever variety of sweet potato that Aldi has been carrying lately seems to have almost no stringy fibers to untangle from my beaters.  Add a hint of nutmeg, and it is like a spoonful of Thanksgiving every time.  They are great in place of rice for bowl full of stir fried root vegetables on a rainy day.

I am hyper aware of fiber lately, I suppose because of the embroidery or mark making with thread that has become a defining characteristic in my work.  The work I am loving most these days is fiber.  Rug tufting. Ombré string instillation. Simply over-stitched paper collages.  I come from a family of quilters, and I love to sew.  It isn’t a huge leap.  I honestly can’t believe my own work didn’t “go there” before now.  I think I felt that I couldn’t measure up as a quilter (imposter syndrome again).  I still don’t know how it developed; one day I just started stitching over my paintings.  Now they are incomplete without stitching.  In the meantime, no one, including me, really considers my work fiber art; therefore, I may be stuck in the mixed media category forever.  This next show is fiber specific.  I’ve been to this show multiple years, and it is awe inspiring.  Thousands of people flock to this show, and it features an ever-evolving range of work both aesthetically and narratively challenging. I want to be a part of this evolution someday.  If you do this work, please be sure to do this show.

Give my choice, I will take acidic or fatty foods over the super sweet.  Give me the zing of wine-laden vinegar or the melt of a beautiful ghee in place of your sugar-crusted desserts.  My palate has transformed over over many years.  Don’t misunderstand, I still love a good cupcake, but I long for more complex choices.  This next Call is an easy choice to make, and a sweet win if you get it.  Take a look…

BEANS
of green

The women in my family have a grudge against the snap of a fresh green vegetable.  My mother has canned green beans for her sisters for the last half-dozen years.  Her process for canning requires a certain amount of cooking plus heat-sealing the jars which compromises the texture.  But, that isn’t where the grudge match ends; my aunts cook canned green beans for hours in addition.  What did green beans ever do to the women in my family?  While I contemplate those answers, here’s a Call that wants to see more work by women.  Take a look…

300 miles from home, and we each wanted a salad on the go.  Google sent me in the direction of a grocery store on the next exit with a huge salad bar.  I came out with a traditional pile of mixed greens, spring peas, boiled eggs, carrots & cucumbers.  My husband came out with segregated little piles of beets, broccoli florets, roasted tomatoes & olives, a wonder of little bites not unlike antipasto.  Two schools of thought, equally valid.  This next Call simply requires a school.  Great exhibitions space…

BOTTLE

I drink everyday–bottles & bottles of water.  As my alter ego, I perform 4 to 5 days per week, and on stage, I suck down approximately 24 ounces of water every 45 minutes to keep my voice in check.  So, let’s talk about the bottles.  I know that disposable bottles are not ideal due to the waste issue, but I am paranoid about being able to be certain that I am really getting disposable bottles truly clean.  I have searched for a reusable bottle that has a large enough opening (for proper cleaning) but is both very compact (has to fit on a mic stand) and non-descript (so it doesn’t stick out in every picture).  I am open to recommendations.  In the meantime, here’s an idea of what to do with YOUR water.  Take a look…

The sight of a train trestle always conjures my cravings for hot chocolate.  My entire life has been spent in residence within about a half-mile of railroad road tracks.  I loved sitting on my front porch in the Fall with a cup of hot chocolate and listen to the trains pass.  That all ended when I moved to Gatlinburg.  Now my cravings for hot chocolate come about through all the standard means–a chill in the air, holiday decorations, a simple sweet tooth.  But, today I found merely the name of the gallery in this next Call sent me in search of cocoa in my cabinet.  This is a wonderful opportunity, don’t miss it…

ICE

Can someone bring me a mango ice shave?  I have been desperately trying not to whine about the heat, but you could stave off my whining with a shave ice.  Really.  Don’t bring me a snow cone; it isn’t the same thing.  It is about the location of the syrup.  In a shave ice/ice shave, the shaving creates a snow-like texture that absorbs the syrup.  In a snow cone, the ice is crushed causing all the syrup to settle to the bottom. Don’t try a shave ice unless you are prepared to never eat a snow cone again. Really.  You can’t keep your hot weather, but don’t keep your hot pics.  This next Call is a great distraction.  No shipping required…
