I am not a morning person; however, I do so much love breakfast foods.  Eggs Benedict, yum.  Fluffy biscuits, pumpkin pancakes, fresh strawberries.  Somethings are worth getting up a little earlier in the morning; however, I have decided breakfast food is fair game anytime of the day instead.  Do not be encouraged to follow my bad example…make sure to apply early to this next Call.

ARTIST RESIDENCY:  Light Work

Learn more about the Light Work Artist Residency online!Every year Light Work invites between twelve and fifteen artists to come to Syracuse to devote one month to creative projects.  Over 350 artists have participated in the AIR program, and many of them have gone on to achieve international acclaim.

The residency includes a $4,000 stipend, a furnished artist apartment, 24-hour access to our state-of-the-art facilities, and generous staff support. Work by each Artist-in-Residence is published in a special edition of Contact Sheet: The Light Work Annual along with an essay commissioned by Light Work. Work by former Artists-in-Residence is also part of the Light Work Collection.

ABOUT LIGHT WORK:  Light Work was founded as an artist-run, non-profit organization in 1973.  Its mission is to provide direct support through residencies, publications, exhibitions, a community-access digital lab facility, and other related projects to emerging and under-represented artists working in the media of photography and digital imaging.

Light Work’s founding directors were Phil Block and Tom Bryan.  The organization has been led by Jeffrey Hoone since 1982.  Light Work is housed in the Robert B. Menschel Media Center at Syracuse University.

SCRAMBLING YOUR EGGS

So the age old question is “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” I, of course, think the question should be “which do I EAT first, the chicken or the egg?”  But for lots of my readers who are facing graduation or career change, the question is “How do I get a job that requires experience if I can’t get a job to get the experience required?”  Tough question.  This next call might provide at least one answer…

Internship at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit

The Internship Program at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) offers participants “hands on” training in the museum profession and a comprehensive overview of museum operations. Interns also gain insight into the national and international world of contemporary art.

Learn more about MOCAD online!The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit Internship Program welcomes students and recent graduates who wish to broaden thir education and professional experience by working and learning in a not-for-profit museum.  All MOCAD departments offer experiential education in a challenging, hands-on environment in exchange for a substantive contribution from talented and interested individuals.

The Museum presents an ambitious schedule of cutting-edge exhibitions as well as educational and outreach programs, and MOCAD interns have the unique opportunity to participate in the development and expansion of these programs and operations.

ELIGIBILITY:  You must be over the age of 18 to qualify for an internship at MOCAD.  Qualifications vary for each intern position and some positions may require college or graduate training and/or professional experience.  In order to increase diversity in professions related to museums and the arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit seeks diversity in its intern staff and provides equal opportunity to its applicants.

Interns must submit an intern application form along with two letters of recommendation from professors and/or previous employers, a resume and a cover letter.

Once your file is complete, please do not call the Intern Coordinator to check on the status of your application.  Only those applicants whom the departments are interested in interviewing will be contacted.  The Department Supervisor will notify selected interns of acceptance at least two weeks before the start of each cycle.

Learn more about MOCAD online!DEADLINES:  December 20, April 15, August 15.  There are three application deadlines and selection periods per year. Internships require a minimum commitment of fourteen hours per week for three months, during which time interns may complete a number of exclusive projects as well as daily assignments. Interns also participate in departmental meetings, special events, and various educational programs, as well as attend regular museum programming including artist talks, lectures, etc.

DEPARTMENTS:  Internships are available in the following departments:  Administration, Development, Education, Exhibitions, Graphic Design, Media Relations, Museum Store, Programming, and Special Events.  For details on the duties of an intern as they relate to each department, visit the Opportunities page.

DAYS & HOURS:  Interns must be able to work a minimum of two days per week/seven hours per day. The exact schedule will be determined with the department supervisor. Interns must be able to work a full term.
