for breakfast

We are all taught from an early age not to judge a book by its cover.  However, nearly every cookbook in my collection got there because of an appetizing photograph on the cover.  A friend that photographs food for a living told me that the looks are often achieved through under cooking, over cooking, shellac, resin and paint.  What a shame that such beautiful food never gets eaten.  But that knowledge does make me feel better about the ugly stuff I serve fairly regularly.  This next Call wants to see your books and challenges artists of ALL media to enter.  Take a look…

I would, on occasion, gladly work for food, but did you know that the Egyptians that built the pyramids were often paid with beer, bread and onions.  I don’t think so; not this girl.  As I have previously mention, I’m not a beer kinda girl, and as much as I love bread, a girl cannot live by bread and onions alone.  This next Call’s fee cannot be paid in bread and onions, but it is Pyramid inspired.  Investigate…

The featured food at my house this week is Jona Gold apples ($.89/lb). Last month is was asparagus ($1.99/lb).  This whole month it has been apples, partly because of our proximity to an orchard, and partly due to price.  We’re heading toward Winter, and I’ll be eating $1 butternut squash for at least 2 months. It is all about eating what’s in season. It is cheaper, healthier, and yummier. Think of it as a seasonal treat.  This next Call is all about the upcoming season, and it’s a treat too!  Take a look…

GLAD?

While in Phoenix recently, I discovered that our hosts were lucky to have an orange tree in their back yard.  Every morning I went out back to the sweet smell of orange blossoms and the overwhelmingly loud buzzing of bees.  I am inspired by the smell and sound.  I wonder if I can get an orange tree to grow in my Smoky Mountain yard?  This next Call is from California — where they have no problem getting orange trees to grow either.

Check out this Call for Entries from Sebastopol Center for the Arts (in California) for Bibliophoria II.  The entry fee is a little high for non-members, but you’ve gotta love book shows.  Book shows are less common than you think so the risk could be worth it.  Take a chance…
