ARTIST of the DAY: Peter Bragino

"Current of the Soul" (acrylic, marker & water pigment) by Peter Bragino
“Current of the Soul” (acrylic, marker & water pigment) by Peter Bragino

“It’s a gift of the intuition that helped me know from a very early age what I would do in life. It’s the first time I fully recognized my soul. That’s why the inner connection to self is so important to me and why my work focuses on celebrating and shining a light on that relationship. I believe everyone has the ability and the right to connect in that way with their own inner knowing. I believe that all personal wisdom and true direction comes from that connection.” Peter Bragino

Wading through this year’s schedule of exciting trips and new adventures has also left me mourning a loss of creative time.  But I make the schedule.  Do I over-schedule so I have a way to excuse lower production.  Is it self sabotage?  Is it a lack of inner connection to my creative self?  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Peter Bragino, reminds me that the ability to connect lies in all of us, but the will must be our own.

ARTIST of the DAY: Carrie Mae Smith

"DuPont Circle Quilt" by Carrie Mae Smith
“DuPont Circle Quilt” by Carrie Mae Smith

“I am interested in re-materializing the sort of objects that history leaves out, utilitarian objects
too common to be recorded or preserved. Historic objects and structures that signify or embody
the evidence of marginalized people who once occupied them.  In this way I engage with concerns
of class, gender and domesticity, through analyzing both forms and their position in society.”
Carrie Mae Smith

So, I opted out of holiday celebrations this year.  I am not feeling particularly Grinch-y; however, it has been a sobering year, and I didn’t feel compelled to fake it.  As a result, I am wading through the unnecessary “cheer ups” & the non-stop recipes for snowflake-shaped confections. I think that it is that very sense of introspection about domesticity and gender that drew me to Carrie Mae Smith, today’s AAAD Artist of the Day.

Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Evla Vlašičová, is a self-taught photographer.  But, after a recent house fire, Evla finds herself without a darkroom.  I find that creative expression is a bit like a trickle of water in that when it encounters an obstacle, it will always find an alternate path –just as Evla has found the art of the linocut.  You won’t find her on social media, but you can watch a great documentary about her creative process here.

we take it, use it, loose it, loose control,
they take it, they take it all back”

The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Marion Täschler, contemplates the rarity, the scarcity, of unforced originality. It has moved her to change her work, change how she presents both her work and herself to the world. That is a scary journey. Admirable.  Thank you.

ARTIST of the DAY: Ruth Tabancay

“Basalt Causeway” (burnt sugar) by Ruth Tabancay

Why food?  I am asked all of the time.  Food & art are connected as inspiration, nourishment & care-giving.  Food is ripe with meaning.  My developing palate & the evolution of my culinary abilities (and responsibilities), as well as my attitude about the suitability of food, echo my growth through the years as an artist and arts administrator –all marking the passage of time. That’s why.

“I am attracted to objects that are already
infused with meaning.”

The most recent work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Ruth Tabancay, features the installation of burnt sugar forms that slowly melt during their installation.  Sugar marking the passage of time, marking the beautiful fluidity, ignoring your impatience or desire to know the destination.  Beautiful.

“. . . A family friend placed me into a basin of water and rose pedals and said ‘This is a felicitous experience’ and I was named Felicia Suzanne.  Unlike my sister, who was saying words before she was one, I rarely spoke.  My father remembers being surprised when I had my first conversation with him when I was 5 or 6.  My early communication mostly consisted of funny noises and the slamming of doors.” Felicia Olin

A strategy for selling art is floating around that suggests that it is how interesting the artist seems, as opposed to their work, that sells work.  And several artists, gallerists & dealers have confirmed with me that when you talk to a collector about the work they buy, they almost always talk about the artists, not the art.  Interesting notion.  Social media already makes it possible for people to create a persona that fulfills any role they choose to put out into the world.  Does selling art mean that we now have to invent new artistic personas for buyers to parallel those romanticized versions we already paint for our alumni publications and holiday newsletters?  It is all too much some days.

I read the bio of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, painter Felicia Olin, before I saw her work.  I was so enamored of the way she put herself out into the world, that I wanted to like her work.  And, I do.  I have a soft spot for portraiture and texture.  I also appreciate less “artspeak” in favor of “realspeak”.  I am entertained by the menagerie of characters created –stories easily inhabiting the shadowed corners of our dreams.  Intrigued, I am, by both the art and the truth which she speaks about herself and her work.

With xenophobia rocking every continent these days, I find myself drawn to universal symbols and signs and habits.  I love seeing clotheslines the world over –streetlamps, sidewalks, door knockers.  We are so much more alike than we are different.  The work of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Sunga Park, takes me around the world, but the details land me right back on my doorstep.

“Untitled” (20 mm mild steel round bar) by Regardt van der Meulen

“People habitually live with a misled sense of security, the illusion that our environment or civilisation is dependable and static. Often times the dangers and violence of the current world we live in interrupts and the illusion of safety is exposed.”
Regardt van der Meulen

___

A friend recently messaged me to say, “I don’t know how I’m going to make it through today. How do you do it?” I replied, “I just put on foot in front of the other until I get to the end.”  In hindsight, even that simple plan is fraught with assumption.  ANY way you get through is better than NOT getting through.  Don’t worry about the bonus points for style.  Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Regardt van der Meulen sculpts with full awareness of the ephemeral nature of how we exist. Fragile, but stubborn.

“In times of overload of visual impressions, I try to send the viewer on a journey of discovery across the painting surface and sensitize him for the few and less in color, structures, cracks and textures.” — Christian Hetzel

______________

Years of being allowed to handle artwork as a juror, curator and/or gallerist has made me the patron that museums loathe.  I want to feel the texture, smell the oils, see the support structure.  Art should always be personal. Intimate. But, I refrain.  I still long to touch, but I don’t.

Today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Christian Hetzel chooses texture and palette to convey a complexity of message.  There is a reason all signs flash and a commercials scream.  Competing for our attention is complicated.  But does it have to be?
