CALL for ENTRIES: Valdosta National 2018

Learn more about the Valdosta National 2018 from Valdosta State University!

ooo-ey goo-ey CENTER

I was born in Florida & spent my adolescence in north Georgia.  We made an annual trip between the two, and Valdosta, GA was one of our regular stops.  We would stop in the same diner every year, and I would order the same grilled cheese with a pickle on top.  As I ate my sandwich & debated the merits of pickle juice on butter-toasted bread, my dad would ask the same question of our waitress, “tell me ’bout Valdosta.”  I don’t remember our server being the same woman every year, but I do remember hearing the same answer every year, “The man that wrote ‘Jingle Bells’ lived here.” I think of that short interaction every year when I receive this annual Call from Valdosta State. This is a great show, story not withstanding, and you should carefully weigh this opportunity…

CALL for ENTRIES: Boundaries

do not EAT

Everyone has a food boundary, a line they will not cross, an item they will not even consider consuming.  For many of my friends, eating something once alive, meat-poultry-fish, is out of the question.  My boundary is a moving target, but I absolutely will not eat things WHILE they are alive.  That’s a thing. Seriously.  Just the idea makes me never want to eat again. This next Call is all about boundaries, real or perceived.  The interpretations are innumerable.

a la CARTE

I lived in South Carolina for almost 20 years.  About half of my time was spent in the Low Country of Charleston and the other half was spent in the Midlands.  Neither South Carolina, nor the South in general, is true to the fried chicken & barbecue stereotype, although excellent versions of both can be found.  The Foot Hills of South Carolina is home to some of the best Modern American menus of the Mississippi.  This next Call calls the area home traditionally offered an excellent menu of shows each year. You could be included…

I dream of rainbow colored foods.  No doubt you’ve read more than one of my artificial food coloring rants. And, for the record, I don’t understand why one would color food for the sake of coloring them.  But the good news is, we are finding our way back to natural pigments made from tumeric, beet root & blueberries.  One day, I’ll get to eat rainbow cupcakes with full abandon & no fear.  This next Call wants the entire rainbow, but you’re only responsible for ONE of the colors.  Take a look…

Lemons fix everything.  You know that iced tea that is too bitter at your local diner.  Lemon.  And that soft drink that is too much syrup and not enough carbonation.  Lemon, again.  The vodka cranberry make with too much juice?  Lemon works better than lime.  It truly is a miracle fruit.  The gallery sponsoring this next Call comes with lemon built into the name.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: Emerging Artists 2018

Learn more about the Emerging Artists 2018 Exhibit from SlowArt Productions and the Limner Gallery!subtle GRAIN

I have never been a big fan of rice. As a child, I only experienced rice as white, short grain & topped with copious amounts of brown gravy.  When put up against the family of starches, including potatoes and pasta, rice has always paled in comparison.  But lately, I have a newfound respect for the subtleties.  Available in a rainbow of hues, this delicate grain makes the best of additions from tomatoes & cumin to mango & orange juice.  Rice has emerged as one of my favorites.  This next Call seeks emerging artists.  Are you emerging? Show your stuff.

Learn more about the National International Open Call 2018 from Antenna Gallery!more ‘SHROOMS

I am eating ALL of the mushrooms.  There is this funny phenomenon where I live.  The grocer stocks lots of high-end perishables just before a holiday weekend in the hopes that tourists visiting our area will buy them at inflated prices.  However, when this doesn’t happen, they all go on clearance or closeout the next day.  The post Labor Day mushroom sale is ON.  Every imaginable shape & variety is available for the same price as a button mushroom.  I want them all.  This next Call is for the artist that wants it all in a solo show –space, time & funding.  Take a look…

Restaurant wait times make me testy, and if I’m “hangry”, you’d better hope the kitchen isn’t in the weeds.  I have a handful of standard distraction techniques, but my favorite is the restaurant with paper cover tables to draw on.  It never fails that my artistic genius strikes when the only materials on hand are roll paper & crayons.  Let’s call them oil pastels, shall we?  This next Call wants your best drawing.  Show ’em what you’ve got…
