ROLLING into spring

It matters little how well you cook if you have missing ingredients.  I’m addicted to simple homemade spring rolls; fresh produce transforms into crispy little treasures. But, for the past couple of months, I’ve been unable to locate spring roll wrappers locally.  Because of their delicate nature, I hesitate to have them shipped because if they arrive cracked, all their stuffing pops out when baked.  Funny how one misses a simple $3 material when it has become a staple.  This next Call is all about the materials.  Take a look…

“The annual exhibition, Material Matters, asks artists who work in a variety of traditional materials — clay, glass, wood, metal or fiber / textile — to consider the traditions underpinning their work and the rules and conventions they break in method or material. Artists are invited to submit original works that change traditional “ways of seeing” by demonstrating a break with the past or suggesting a new way forward, whether toward logical or illogical conclusions. ” –from bwac.org

ELIGIBILITY: Open to U.S. artists 18+

MEDIA: Open to clay, glass, wood or metal alone or in combination.

ENTRY FEE:  $35 up to 5, $5 ea. add’l until 6/28 (early) or $50 for up to 5, $5 ea. add’l until July 15 (final).

DEADLINE:  June 28, 2018 (early bird) or July 15, 2018 (final)

NOTIFICATION:  August 17, 2018

JUROR: Melissa Stern is an artist and journalist. Her drawing and sculpture have been exhibited in museums, galleries, private and corporate collections throughout the world.  Stern uses a wide range of materials including encaustic, clay, pastel, and steel. Her sculptural work includes found objects, souvenirs, vintage magazines and books as well as fabricated images and sculpture. Her art reviews and cultural commentary have been featured in Hyperallergic, a Brooklyn-based digital arts publication, and she serves as Art Editor for Posit, a journal of literature and art.

AWARDS:  Gold $250, Silver $150, Bronze $50 & five (5) Certificates of Merit.

SALES: BWAC will retain a 30% commission on all exhibition sales.

JUROR:  Emily Williams creates detailed glass sculptures inspired by the natural world. Her glass sculptures explore complex plant & sea life forms.  Science & natural history have always played a strong role in her life. She began teaching sculpture in 1989 at Clarion University of PA. Over the years she has shared her passion for sculpture with her students.  Williams has received a number of grants and awards through the years, including a Fulbright Hays grant to study in Italy. Williams was awarded her M.F.A. in Sculpture from Washington University in Saint Louis, MO.

AWARDS:  Juror’s Awards will be named by the juror and announced at the Awards Reception on Sunday, November 12, 2017. These are cash awards for high-quality work.  Purchase Awards will be named by the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery and will become part of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library’s permanent art collection. Awards are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

SALES:  The Sabatini Gallery encourages potential buyers to contact the artist directly.  The Alice C. Sabatini Gallery & the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library receive no commission on sales.

CALL for ENTRIES: Material Matters

My husband does design work for a commercial potter.  As a result, I find myself lingering over the kitchenware when I visit his office.  I am currently obsessed with the little 4-cup mixing bowls with a pour spout.  I own one in stainless steel, and it is my “go to” for small jobs like dressings, dips & marinades.  Having multiple, beautifully hand-thrown versions with a pour spout is nearly more temptation than I can take.  My inability to choose a glaze is the only thing saving me at the moment.  This next call celebrates both metal & glass, plus glass & wood.  Take a look…

ARTIST of the DAY: Fenella Elms

I met the talented James Dickey, the author of  the book Deliverance, many years ago. As I drove through the rural south today in search of the perfect patch upon which to grow the rest of my life, I felt the feral nature that must have inspired so much of the desperation with which the book reeks.  When my flight instinct kicks in, I need only look up to the trees to see the topmost tiny branches swaying in the biting cold air to find my calm again.  The work of today’s Artist of the Day, Fenella Elms, gives me that same sense of order in the disorder.  Calm in the chaos.

ARTIST of the DAY: Ellen Jewett

STRANGE and gentle

As the years go by, I have come to view the details with different eyes.   With people, I have a far greater capacity for empathy even without intimate knowledge of every detail.  But with art, I find myself captivated by the minutia.  I enjoy dissecting the elements.  The sculpture of today’s Artist of the Day, Ellen Jewett, keeps me busy for hours.  A cursory glance may reveal spectacular figurative work, but the individual elements offer tiny narratives to be combined into a more complicated world view.  Mesmerizing. JUROR:  Elizabeth Kozlowski is the curator of the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and has over 12 years of curatorial and gallery experience with a specialty in contemporary ceramics.  Prior to joining HCCC, Kozlowski served as the Windgate Curatorial Fellow at Arizona State University Art Museum.  Kozlowski has acted as Asst Preparator for Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art & as Gallery Director for Florida Craftsmen, Inc.

I rarely drink alcoholic beverages at home.  I have a sort of daily ritual that starts with two carbonated drinks which are followed by unsweetened, decaffeinated, iced black and/or orange tea until bedtime.  It never really occurs to me to deviate from that norm except when we are on stage or out for a special occasion.  Maybe I would be more inspired if I had something creative out of which to drink, like the ones found in this next Call.  It isn’t just about pottery either…
