CALL for ENTRIES: Knox Photo 2017

Learn more about Knox Photo 2017 from the Arts and Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville!green PROMISE

My papaya won’t ripen; it has been in my kitchen window for a week.  Ahhhh.  I try to eat mostly locally sourced/grown food; however, I am not going to commit myself to a lifetime of no bananas or papaya or mango because I live in the wrong grow zone.  As a result, some of the tropical fruits I buy are vastly under-ripe.  I usually just gross my fingers and hope for the best.  But when you know how fantastic something will the be, the anticipation can be a overwhelming.  This next Call is for a show I anticipate every year, both as a participant and a viewer.  Don’t miss this chance…

Check out this Call for Entries from Arts & Culture Alliance (Knoxville, TN) for the Knox Photo 2017. I have shown here.  I have juried here.  I teach here.  I would love to see your contribution here. Take a look…

Light is that which compels a photograph into being: shifting, glowing, luminous, obscure or brilliant.

The medium of photography brazenly defined: How our tools, environs and subjects respond to light.  Sometimes the light plays a more prominent role in a photograph, sometimes as a supporting actor and sometimes as the protagonist itself.

Low light, bright light and every stop in between. Light can be luminous & rich, or a stark spotlight, it can wildly dance, or softly edge darkness and cast shadows. Light can reflect and sparkle or be blinding and disarming. Natural light vs. man-made light sources: sunrises and sunsets, moonlight and neon light!

An enduring fascination with the photographic portrait.

Each portrait reveals something of the sitter, the photographer and also of us as viewers. No one image can muster a whole and complete being, no matter how much we believe this could be so. This is the part of the photograph we create in our imagination, we fill in each crack and hole with a sort of personalized reasoning. And all these unknowns in the midst of true transparency.

Eye contact is made or retracted, body language boastful, reticent or indecipherable. Facial expressions can be hard at work or numbly slack. While subjects have a power over these photographic outcomes, it is the choice of the photographer to coax or mute said expressions for their artistic offering.

Feast your eyes & dig in. The taste of food photography.

From farm to table; the harvesting, preparing and plating of culinary masterpieces.  Food, we eat it to survive.  Yet if grown and prepared with intention, these are the dishes we savor.

Cooking can be a lot like taking a great photograph.  Both lend themselves to fearless experimentation, adaptation and, ultimately, the creation of something awe-inspiring.

Photography capturing this process is something that all walks of life can connect to and be stirred by.  The act of breaking bread with one another is deeply ingrained in our many traditions and ancestry.
