I have pureed everything today. I made black bean soufflé early in the day to go with the slaw-topped taco my husband made later. I cooked & pureed extra beans to put up in the freezer as a soup base for next week. Lunch was delivery pizza. Our mid-afternoon snack was a mango-peach-guava-banana smoothie. While my husband made apple-pepper slaw for our tacos, I processed a half-bushel of apples for applesauce. I have washed my food processor four times today. (Just a reminder, no dishwasher in my house.) I am trying to keep busy.

I mean, I did finish framing a commission while I am waiting for THREE past-due notifications. I need mindless busy. How do venues take our money and not notify on time? Why not just under-promise? Why not five themselves and extra week then surprise us all with an early notification? Of course, my imagination and insecurities ramp up to a 14 & I begin to assume that I haven’t gotten an email because I have been rejected, or, that I was so bad that I didn’t warrant a response. When left with too much time to dwell on it, I start to become paranoid like an 1990s sitcom and wonder if my phone is working or if email is out-of-order. Ridiculous. So, soufflé, soup, smoothie & applesauce. Noisy. Delicious. Busy.

This next Call is screaming my name. I’ve not been interested in a lot of galleries lately because I am looking to build a very specific profile for my resume. I am trying to patiently wait for the academic & publicly funded shows I really want. But I am digging this space. There are a number of great art hot spots in New Mexico, like Satan Fe. In fact, New Mexico is on my new short list of relocation possibilities. This gallery supports a reassuringly diverse art aesthetic and range of media. I like the unapologetic nature of this Call too. I’m hoping to get my crap together & enter. Let me know how it sounds to YOU.

the SMOOTH move

I finally have a use for all those black, frozen bananas cluttering my freezer –the afternoon smoothie. I live with two high-metabolism guys, so the 4 o’clock afternoon snack is standard here. I’m not new to the concept of the smoothie, but I am new to making them regularly. Frozen cantaloupe, whole milk yogurt and a melange of other goodies like vanilla, berries, chia seeds. I am frequently still NOT hungry when dinner prep time rolls around. The best part is that they are super fast & have almost no clean up, giving me less distraction and fewer avoidance excuses.

I need fewer reasons to make excuses. Do you hibernate from responsibility when overwhelmed? Me too. I am a member of a handful of online artistic communities, and I read all the bickering about what shows are worth entering and which aren’t. No one seems to see different paths. Everyone seems to have divided up into teams “realism” vs. “abstraction”, “fine art” vs. “applied arts”. Where are you? And why can’t your decision be based on where YOU are or where you want to be? Right now, I am interested mainly in academic and museum shows because this is a period of growth and change. What shows feel right to you? Are you concentrating on publication? Are you testing new work in online venues? Are you searching for gallery representation or maybe higher volume commercial sales? All of those paths are valid. Don’t get sucked into the guilt of not fulfilling the vision someone else has for what being a successful artist means. (Remind me to talk about Insta-worthy studios sometime.)

Check out this Call for Entries for the 56th Annual Juried Exhibition from the Masur Museum of Art (Monroe, LA). $20 Entry & no commission. This is a stunning museum show with a storied history. Futter’s specialty is with European and American Decorative arts from 1850-present, and she has previously held positions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Yale Center for British Art, and the Chrysler Museum of Art.

AWARDS: Best in Show is $1,000, and total awards are $3,200. The People’s Choice Award is $200.00 and will be voted on by visitors throughout the run of the exhibition. Best Packed: $100 This award will honor for the artist who packs their art in the most professional manner. ♥

I’ve spent a lifetime drinking 2% & skim milk without concern to its origin, only the expiration date. As the world has become more conscious of what we put in our bodies, I continued to drink lower fat options from dairies employing more healthful methods of production. But even those varieties are often too sweet and are ineffective in adding flavor and consistency to my cooking. I have finally given into the value of organic, whole milk products. Value-driven shopping isn’t always the cheapest route. This next Call costs more to enter than some others, but it offers HUGE cash award options. Is this the right value for you? I make a lot of granola these days. I tripped across this mostly Paleo recipe & altered it to taste. (We don’t eat Paleo, specifically, but I am often drawn to the recipes.) This version is absent the oats found in most granola, so it lacks the chalky, starchy lethargic quality of the stereotypical bagged cereal. My version is mostly nuts & seeds with a bit of dried fruit, coconut oil & a dash of honey. There seems to always be a batch in the oven, and I’m going through roll after roll of parchment paper. Aside from the directorial, curatorial, management and sales knowledge gained from those experiences, she also worked as a corporate art consultant in acquisitions for Goldman Sachs, Banco Santander and Pitney Bowes. A very important position in her career was spent in the academic sector acting as Director of Finance for the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at Columbia University. She continues to be a contributing member to Arttable and the Association for Women Art Dealers as well as a Benefit Committee member of the International Print Center of NY.

Red is my favorite color. On an unrelated note, I’ve never eaten a red food I didn’t love. Hmmm. I find it hard to resist even the red-adjacent –raspberries, rambutan & now lychee. I live in black bear country, and hyperphagia is coming to an end soon. Hyperphagia is the time of year when the bears gorge themselves in preparation for their winter “hibernation”, although black bears don’t really hibernate, per see. (I digress.) COLD complication

As winter approaches, I am more & more distracted. I buy a handful of pantry items for single recipes. For example, I use canned cream-style corn in one indulgent corn pudding recipe and buttermilk only in cornbread. But, the problem arises because they look like similar items in the cupboard –anything canned or my regular milk. You only have to put buttermilk on one bowl of cereal to not want to make that mistake again. My solution? Organization. Making pasta used to be a joy. I enjoyed hand-cutting linguine and stuffing beautiful little half-moon ravioli. But, my husband’s Celiac’s diagnosis put a crimp in my ravioli revelry.
