Through a Lens– Vibrant

Vibrant and vibrate have the same latin root word: “vibrare” meaning to move rapidly and rhythmically to and fro. While vibrate means virtually the same thing in English, vibrant has additional connotations as it applies to brightness of light or color, or as in how alive or energetic is the given subject – literally vibrating with life. “

Through a Lens: Vibrant! gives the photographer several options. Vibrant could apply to a light or hue in the composition, or it could apply to the subject, as to a person or in a street. It could even be stretched to apply to the process – check out the vibrance adjustment layer in photoshop. Which definition of “Vibrant!” will you choose?

Audubon, The California Academy of Sciences, The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, Sunset, Westcliffe, and The Wilderness Society have published his work.

Photographer Michael Collopy is one of the preeminent portrait photographers of our time and has gained worldwide recognition for his commissioned portraits of hundreds of public figures. His portfolio includes portraits of world leaders such as Pope John Paul II, Mikhail Gorbachev and Margaret Thatcher and entertainers like Ella Fitzgerald, Mick Jagger, B. B. King and Luciano Pavarotti. Collopy’s photos have been published worldwide in numerous books, magazines and newspapers.

Kate Jordahl exhibits her enthusiasm and passion for the art of photography in her work. In her travels and photography, she searches for the places where the spirit of the earth and the human spirit come together. Using both film and digital capture, Kate stretches her images to beyond the expected representation to a magical and reverent imaging of the land.

It is a happy, shiny New Year, and I am excited about the possibilities. Per usual, I am optimistic about the future… nauseatingly optimistic, according to my husband Jon. However, most folks will also tell you that my attitude toward life is often like my taste in food…direct, unapologetic and undiplomatic. Can food be unapologetic and undiplomatic? Absolutely. Have you ever met a cheese named Limberger? That sort of straight forwardness is what drew me to this next Call. Investigate…

Check out the Call for Entries from the Light, Space & Time Gallery for their online Landscapes competition. You know that I am not a huge fan of online competitions; however, I think of this as digital publication which is always a good thing. The entry fee is dirt cheap, and the value of inbound links to your website is priceless. Take a look…

Landscapes

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery presents a Juried Competition, in which 2D artists from around the world are called upon to make online submissions for the theme Landscapes for inclusion into the March 2012 online group exhibition.

DEADLINE: The submission process for artists ends February 27, 2012.

ENTRY FEE: $10 for 2 Entries or $15.00 for 3 to 5 Entries

In addition, 5 artists will be recognized with Honorable Mention awards. Depending on the amount and the quality of the entries these winning categories may be expanded and there also may be Special Recognition awards posted as well.

BENEFITS: Your artwork is exposed to thousands of visitors to the website each month. Your artwork is retained on the website in the Archives section for further and ongoing exposure. The Artist’s website is linked to Light Space & Time. Winners for that month are promoted in direct email pieces to gallery owners and directors, corporate art representatives and decision makers in the art world. Winners for that month will be promoted to 50+ news and press release outlets, thus creating more traffic, exposure and back links to the artist and their website. Participating winners are gaining valuable experience, marketing their artwork and building their resumes for a very low cost to take part in one of the gallery’s online competitions. *Editor’s Note: This statement is not a guarantee from www.ArtAndArtDeadlines.com, but it comes directly from the Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery website.

Why does beer come in six packs? My house is dotted with six packs. It isn’t like THAT. I am NOT a beer drinker, but my husband IS a beer brewer. My son’s room would be far less cluttered if beer were more efficiently packaged. Did I forget to mention that my husband stores his beer under my 12-year-old’s bed? Okay, I am going to stop before this sounds even worse. This call is a much better use of things that come in sixes. Take a look…

How does the older generation eat at 4:30 in the afternoon? I am hoping it is just a Golden-Girls-esque stereotype. I prefer to eat late night, but then again, I prefer to do everything at night. Everything tastes better after 8pm, but that may account for the reality of my lifelong struggle with the size of my rear end. My husband likes to jokingly refer to me as his “vampire-honey,” but that is clearly untrue…vampires don’t eat food. But I would look cute as Countess Chocula. Well, we all know I am a little hyper-focused on eating. Anyhoo, I digress. This next call wants to see your vision of the night. Investigate…

Check out this Call for Entries from the Darkroom Gallery (Essex Junction, VT) for Night Light. Night Light

Night photography reveals a world that we do not consciously see and offers photographers unique creative opportunities.

Night and day, dark and light – one implies the absence of the other. But like yin yang, each has a bit of the other. The surprising thing to first time night photographers is how their images reveal things that the mind’s eye does not see. Different light sources reveal their true colors. Compared to daylight, directed and weaker light creates drama, contrast, mystery and mood.

The dynamic range of light at night tends to be more in line with our tools abilities. Of course there are technical challenges with shooting in low light, but also tremendous creative opportunities. That’s what Darkroom Gallery wants to show with this exhibit.

Do you work with existing light – or do you introduce your own? Maybe you paint with light emitting light brushes. How have you approached shooting at night to express your vision? They want to see.

Narrative is an essential tool of understanding and communication of ideas. Humanities from history to politics to science are understood and disseminated through narrative tools. Characters and bildungsroman are the flesh and blood of narratives, which link us to our past and help guide our vision of the future. Narrative is a thread which represents, interprets, and shapes our world. Our narrative is often truth for lack of capital-T-Truth as we manipulate it so it may manipulate us. Perhaps most importantly, it is a double-edged sword which grants us access to experiences which may be beyond our reach–independent of space, time, and reality. This exhibition seeks to explore the power of character and narrative through games and art.”
