Lettuce & tomato are the exception, not the norm, in hamburger toppings any longer.  You can get burgers made from soy, mushrooms or fried eggs,  topped by aioli infused with truffles or ghost chiles, and even I have fallen under the spell of maple syrup drizzled over arugula.  Don’t knock it.  Inventive food combinations require an uncommon type of creativity.  This Call wants your inventive work.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Upstream Gallery (Hastings-on-Hudson, New York) for The Inventive Eye, an exhibit for works on paper.  I would love to see the interpretations generated from this theme. Do you have something to submit?

My diet has been less than ideal for the past month.  I’ve been stress eating all the cheese and fried food I can get my hands on lately, and surprise, I’m feelin’ kinda crappy.  I started this week on a positive note though.  I’m turning over a new leaf this week, well lots of new leaves — spinach leaves, among other foods that support health and uplift my mood.  Hopefully the tide will turn on the “yucks”.  This next Call is looking for work to put in an uplifting position, in a literal sense.  Take a look…

my CREME-filled heart

My husband and I celebrated our 20th anniversary with Chinese takeout because neither of felt like cooking or grocery shopping.  It was our typical night egg drop soup & steamed dumplings, but the thing that made the night a celebration came in a paper bag.  A beautiful, fresh chocolate eclair from our local doughnut shop, a guilty pleasure from the middle years of our marriage when that was one of the only splurges we could afford.  Since then, I tend to watch my sugar intake and my husband was diagnosed with a wheat allergy.  But with a that single damn-the-consequences pastry, I felt the heart flutter that says he’ll stick for another twenty.  Some of the best things come in, or on, paper just like in this next Call.  Plus the gallery is gorgeous…

Check out this Call for Entries from Barrett Art Center (Poughkeepsie, NY) for Pushing Paper.   This venue is spectacular, and venues open to cutting edge work are always appreciated.  Take a look…

say CHEESE

I can’t imagine how many times I have written the words “I love goat cheese”.  It is easy for me to for to write these posts and reveal my food soul and forget that people READ these posts.  But when I give career development seminars, I have readers that show up (thank you) and have conversations with me about food that remind me that people know way too much about what I eat, ha.  Recently at a seminar about branding yourself as an artist, I had someone bring me goat’s milk soap since they couldn’t keep goat’s milk cheese cold. ♥  This next Call doesn’t have a lot of requirements, but one of them is that your design must include a goat.  No, I’m not kidding.

groovy FOOD

I am finally in the groove of cooking for two.  Since my kid left for college, there have been A LOT of leftovers crowding my freezer, but it is getting better.  When he comes home for a weekend, it often takes me a week to recover my cooking-for-two-ness, but it is better than it used to be.  Just remember: 1 zucchini per person, 1 potato per meal, buy broccoli crowns, not bunches; it’s a groove thing. Partial boxes and bags and cans of food drive me crazy.  I am too “thrifty” to get rid that extra half cup of evaporated milk or quarter box of pasta.  As a result my menu has become a litany of recipes that recycle the odds and ends that happen as a result of making the foods I actually intended to make.   This next Call wants your art make from all things recycled.  This is a great show.  Don’t miss the early bird deadline just days away!

raw FOOD

In a world where so many people are vegetarian or vegan, steak tartar was once the most controversial food conversations one could have.  Now we have so many more choices of things with which to disagree.  If we just stick to raw foods, there are still subgroups like fruitarians, juicearians, or sproutarians which cause heads to metaphorically explode.  The bottom line is that people have the right to determine what goes into their bodies, and what we choose to eat says something about who we are.  We are what we eat, right?  This next Call wants to know the raw truth about you through your work.  This one is personal…
