My three favorite restaurants are all in North Carolina featuring American, Spanish & Italian cuisines.  They are all within a few blocks walk of each other.  Is it the education system that produces the culinary prowess? Is it the city that attracts it the creative?  Is it the small farm specialization that inspires clever savory vision?  I don’t know, but this Call hails from the same state.  Investigate this show.

BERRY good

Painting with food is fun.  About 15 years ago, I was a gallerist faced with the challenge of creating a curriculum for day camp that would teach children concepts & techniques employed in abstract painting.  Again & again we found that painting with berries was the biggest success.  It bypassed brush skills which are a challenge for kids under 6, and it relieved parents’ worries about the toxicity of paint.  And of course, teaching other people’s children to play with their food is always fun, ha.  This Call is all about painting, but using berries isn’t required.  Take a look…

a little KITCHEN

So, the move is complete.  My husband & I have downsized our home by half as the next step in our being completely mobile.  I am currently referring to my home as “box city” for reasons that I imagine are obvious.  Part of the move included purging my life of all the “stuff” weighing me down, including kitchen gadgets and single-use appliances.  The lack of stuff has necessarily affected my cooking as well, encouraging simplicity, whole foods & clean eating.  It is a new place, a new space & an opportunity for a fresh perspective.  This next Call, although un-themed, reinforces the idea of a unique sense of place.  Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: The Art of Timelessness

Learn more about The Art of Timelessness Call from LA Photo Curator! the CLASSICS

I drove from Tennessee through Arkansas to Texas in two days this week, then immediately got on a plane from Dallas to Atlanta and then on to Charlotte.  Yes, I AM road weary.  All that traveling means a lot of restaurant and convenience foods.  I was also traveling with a teenager in tow, so the food choices weren’t always the healthiest.  By day three I was in full-on vegetable withdrawal when I tripped across a new restaurant, modern & sleek, somewhere in Arkansas whose specialty was salads.  Not deconstructed, not a self-serve buffet, not odd combinations or fusion cuisine.  Just salads –Cobb, Caesar, caprese & more.  Just the classics, timelessly delicious. This next Call is all about timelessness.  Take a look…

“As artists, one nurtures & comes to possess a visually attuned intuition. For some gaining this 2nd sight takes a lifetime of hunting and searching. Others seem to be born with this keen sense of knowing.  Most of us have experienced these timeless yet eternal essences. Like a memory lodged deep inside our psyche- these transitory moments are illusive and appear quick as lightning. . . the fleeting second of light, composition & memory.” –from Lisa Gizara via laphotocurator.com

MEDIA: Photography

Gizara has extensive exhibition experience including the upcoming exhibit at The SFO Museum from May 18th – September 7th of this year.  Gizara’s infrared photographic series “Surreal Escapes” was shown at the Annenberg Space for Photography’s Iris Night Series with a solo show at the G2 Gallery in Venice.  A limited edition portfolio of Gizara’s work was placed in the Oscar Nominee Gift Bags, and Jennifer Lawrence and Bruce Dern added Gizara’s work to their private collections.

AWARDS:  The curator chooses one 1st place winner, one 2nd place winner & 3 honorable mentions. Over the years, I have fallen for all foods Chicago style.  From deep-dish pizza to hot dogs to open face horseshoes with fries piled high, the windy city knows its food.  But just like my state is more than Memphis BBQ or Nashville Hot, Illinois is more than the famous foods of Chicago.  Did you know that Illinois is one of the few states that has adopted an official snack food –popcorn.  Their unique spin is equal parts cheese & caramel-flavored varieties, a state after my own heart.  This next Call is from that very state, and the commission is so low…

Learn more from the Coburn Gallery at Ashland University in Ashland, OH!years of WINE and art

I eat a lot of food, so do you, it is how we survive.  I also see a lot of art; it is also how I survive, quit literally, since it is my occupation.  I rarely know much about an artist personally before I see their work, and I am intrigued how many of the artists behind the work I love end up being in their 40s or 50s or older.  It isn’t exclusively that, but it is far more common that would seem coincidental.  Maybe art, like wine, cheese & beef, ages well.  Show off your maturity with this next call.  Take a look…

Sleep is not my friend.  As a lifelong insomniac, and I have tried EVERY remedy –prescription, herbal, oils, sounds, aroma.  Lack of sleep promotes depression. For me, depression often takes the form of extended weeks or months of “the blues” marked by an remarkable lethargy and a sort of emotional paralysis.  It is more common in winter, so I am actively combating insomnia every February.  This year, I am having moderate success by not snacking late at night (my apologies to the massive hit sustained by the popcorn industry) & getting half an hour of moderate exercise each morning.  Creativity is the ultimate therapy & this next Call is a great chance to work out some pent up “blues”.  Investigate….
