CALL for ART: Gifts of Art

Learn more about the Gifts of Art program from Michigan Medicine!

one EGG or two?

Simplicity can be a gift.  Sometimes what I want to eat has less to do with a craving and more to do with the ease of preparation.  When I’ve had a productive day, a drawn-out night of cooking weighs me down.  Sometimes an egg sandwich is just an egg sandwich; sometimes an egg sandwich is a gift.  This next Call see the transformative effect of art on our reparative health as a gift.  Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries from Michigan Medicine (Ann Arbor, MI), the academic medical center of the University of Michigan, for Gifts of Art.  Contrary to the name’s implication, artists are NOT asked to donate work.  I like this call…

cha-cha-cha-CHIA

Now that it is warmer outside, I find myself turning to lighter food for breakfast.  My “go to” is often yogurt and fruit, but the downside is that I will often be hungry again long before lunchtime arrives.  My solution is to add a few chia seeds.  They pack a punch of energy while letting me have a “light” breakfast.  Next?  This Call is all about exploring the lighter side.  Take a look…

Lettuce & tomato are the exception, not the norm, in hamburger toppings any longer.  You can get burgers made from soy, mushrooms or fried eggs,  topped by aioli infused with truffles or ghost chiles, and even I have fallen under the spell of maple syrup drizzled over arugula.  Don’t knock it.  Inventive food combinations require an uncommon type of creativity.  This Call wants your inventive work.  Take a look…

my CREME-filled heart

My husband and I celebrated our 20th anniversary with Chinese takeout because neither of felt like cooking or grocery shopping.  It was our typical night egg drop soup & steamed dumplings, but the thing that made the night a celebration came in a paper bag.  A beautiful, fresh chocolate eclair from our local doughnut shop, a guilty pleasure from the middle years of our marriage when that was one of the only splurges we could afford.  Since then, I tend to watch my sugar intake and my husband was diagnosed with a wheat allergy.  But with a that single damn-the-consequences pastry, I felt the heart flutter that says he’ll stick for another twenty.  Some of the best things come in, or on, paper just like in this next Call.  Plus the gallery is gorgeous…

FLAVOR bombs

Was there a bumper crop of clementines this year?  Most winters I cling to them as a dose of orange-y sunshine while I wait for the greens to turn green and the tomatoes to lose their gray, hot house pallor.  But, truth-be-told, most clementines I buy seem flavorless starting around the end of February.  But this year we’re into April, and they are still bursting with flavor and adding beautiful color to so many of my meals.  This next Call wants to see your color inspiration.  Take a look…

“In visual perception a color is almost never seen as it really is—as it physically is. This fact makes color the most relative medium in art. In order to use color effectively it is necessary to recognize that color deceives continually. DESSERT-less

My Chinese take-out night has a routine: egg drop soup, steamed dumplings, Kan Shaw beef & a fortune cookie. My friend who works behind the counter laughs every time I pick up a menu because he knows my order won’t change. Until last week, my husband came home with a bag of neatly stacked fold-up boxes & a pint of steaming soup.  Dinner was lovely, but cookie-less.  Fortune cookies must now be ordered; they cost 25¢ each. I know the cookies are far from Chinese & the fortunes ridiculous.  But, it I love them still.   Just when it seems “nothing is free” is confirmed, there comes our next Call.  Here is your chance to be included in a group exhibit or have a show of your own, no entry fee.  Take a look…

one CUBE, or two?

I have finally resolved that consuming water is necessary.  While I still prefer my beverage more dressed up than water, but I do get it.  What I do not get is the temperature specificity.  I have a friend that posts every nutritional fact she can find to social media.  Her newest campaign suggests that cold water burns more calories than warm water.  Completely flabbergasted by this possibility, I did my homework.  The difference turned out to be 8 calories.  EIGHT calories.  Do you care about 8 calories?  Me neither, but I do prefer my water cool.  This next Call doesn’t care whether you like it hot or cool, they want to see it.  And, it seems open to wide interpretation…

groovy FOOD

I am finally in the groove of cooking for two.  Since my kid left for college, there have been A LOT of leftovers crowding my freezer, but it is getting better.  When he comes home for a weekend, it often takes me a week to recover my cooking-for-two-ness, but it is better than it used to be.  Just remember: 1 zucchini per person, 1 potato per meal, buy broccoli crowns, not bunches; it’s a groove thing. sprouts of SPRING

Green onions are among the first shoots sent up in Spring.   They taste like the more refined cousin of wild onions whose smell I associate with fresh-cut grass.  The greens are only fresh for a few days, but the bulbs protect themselves by turning outer layers into a husk-like spring jacket.  The green, slightly bitter bite they offer quiche is high on my list of favorite flavors.  This next Call is also one of my favorites of Spring.   Take a look…
