Again I contemplate beginnings. I am a believer in being a professional beginner. It is never too late to begin again. When I stumbled across the statement of today’s AAAD Artist of the Day, Tim Hallinan, his “I think that’s where my ideas begin” struck a chord with me. Maybe I should examine my re-starts and points of departure for patterns. Or maybe not.

Every meal needs a start point, a launch pad of sorts. That start is often inspired by a random item that catches my eye in the pantry. Black-eyed peas become the start for hoppin’-john-inspired tamales. Corn sometimes inspires chowder while blueberries end up in pancakes. This next Call offers two opportunities, one to help you launch your project or another to help develop an existing project. The deadlines if fast approaching so take a look today!

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Open to photography. Work derived from all photographic processes are accepted, as well as mixed media work that is photo-based (only still images are accepted, no multimedia components).

DEADLINE: March 3, 2017

ENTRY FEES: $45 members/ $55 non-members (for 15-20 images for Project Launch or 6-10 images for Project Development)

JURORS: For Project Launch: Mazie M. Harris is an Assistant Curator in the J. Paul Getty Museum; Christy Havranek is the Photo Director at the Huffington Post; and Dewi Lewis established his publishing house in 1994.

For Project Development: Dewi Lewis established his publishing house in 1994. Internationally known, its authors have included photographers such as Martin Parr, Simon Norfolk, Pentti Sammallahti, Paolo Pellegrin, Sergio Larrain, and Anders Petersen as well as many younger emerging photographers.

AWARDS: Project Launch Grant: $5000 1st Prize, and three $1000 Juror’s Choice awards. Project Development Grant: one $5,000 award. In addition to cash awards, each grant offers other rewards. For details, read the full Calls.

The greens are emerging. Many of you know that I live in Gatlinburg and wildfires recently swept the area. Firefighters stopped the fire a mere 6′ from my doorstep. The forest surround my home is charred. But all of this unseasonably warm February weather (76°F today) has prompted the most tender of green leaves and unexpected happy daffodil heads to appear. ENTRY FEE: $15 per application (up to 10 images)

JURORS: Admission to the VisArts Studio Fellowship is highly selective, based on a review of applications by panels of artists & art professionals. Panelists include painters, sculptors, film and video artists, photographers, installation artists, inter-disciplinary artists, and independent curators. The admission panel is rotated regularly.

AWARDS: The Studio Fellowship offers the gift of time and space to two artists and/or collaborative artist teams each year to experiment and realize new work. Fellows will present their work in solo exhibitions at the end of their respective fellowships. Fellows will be provided with a 169 square foot studio, free of charge, for a period of six months + $500 monthly stipend. Each studio is equipped with a sink, Wi-Fi connection & abundant natural light.

Lavender infused whipped cream is a favorite treat in my house. But at the moment, I am growing lavender in a window sill for my husband’s head. The weather has been so beautiful that I’ve been leaving the doors open without benefit of screen doors, and every night mosquitoes make a meal of Jon’s forehead. Lavender is both a sleep-inducing aromatic and a mosquito repellent. So, homemade lavender-infused coconut oil is my medicinal hope for continuing to enjoy open doors. Tevž Logar currently works as an independent curator and collaborates with different institutions and galleries. Between 2009 and 2014 he worked as artistic director of Škuc Gallery in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Zorana Đaković Minniti works in the Cultural Centre of Belgrade as coordinator for the international cooperation and program coordinator of Podroom gallery within same institution.

AWARDS: 1st prize €3,000 ($3165 USD approx) & 2nd Prize is €1,000 ($1055 USD approx). Plus, the jury will select 18 artists to exhibit the submitted works in an art gallery of a European city from June 1-14, 2017.

I enjoy creative process. I find it meditative. My own visual work requires lots of repetition. I like to knit. More repetition. I have a handful of favorite recipes. Even more repetition. As a result, I often end up in looping rut of repetition. In the kitchen, I break the sameness by trying a recipe outside my comfort zone.
