What makes comfort food a comforting food? I have a friend whose local tradition is bring food to a grieving family. Upon the death of her cousin, she noted that a half-dozen dishes of macaroni and cheese, two layered dips and three lasagnas, none of them comforting to all. For me it is fried green tomatoes, and occasionally goat cheese. After a little research it seems that it isn’t the cheese or butter or starch that makes comfort food, it is familial connection, the security of childhood (if you had any). I am fairly certain my father never tasted goat cheese in his life, but my grandmother made the best fried green tomatoes ever. So, maybe. I don’t know. What do you think? We learn to restructure our lives and identify our worst thoughts as an avenue for growth. Maybe it leads to art making. Maybe we photographed this seemingly impossible event. We create photographs for different reasons, whether personal, political, for the purpose of change or a combination of these motivations. CURATOR: Frances Jakubek is the Head of Exhibitions at Bruce Silverstein Gallery in New York City and past Associate Curator of the Griffin Museum of Photography in Massachusetts. Jakubek has been a guest writer for Don’t Take Pictures, Diffusion Magazine and for artist and gallery publications. She was a panelist for the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Photography fellowships, speaker for The Photo Brigade and juror for international exhibitions including ‘The Fence’ and PDN’s ‘The Curator Awards’. For her personal work, (though it’s all personal), recent exhibitions include The Griffin Museum of Photography, Boston, MA; Filter Photo Space, Chicago, IL; The Southern Contemporary Art Gallery in Charleston, SC; Camera Commons in Dover, NH; The Hess Gallery at Pine Manor College, MA; Plates to Pixels Online Gallery; and the Dorchester Art Project, MA.

AWARDS: The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. Gaining recognition throughout the area, her work has been shown in multiple group exhibitions across NC & in Richmond, VA. Suggs has been awarded several grants & honors, including the NC Fellowship Award, a city of Richmond CultureWorks Grant, and a residency at the Quirk Hotel & Gallery in Richmond, VA. Her work is part of several corporate collections, and she is currently a curator at LIGHT Art + Design.

AWARDS: Cash awards totaling $2,000 will be presented at the exhibit’s Opening Reception –Best in Show ($1000), 2nd Place ($500), 3rd Place ($250), 2 Merit awards ($125 ea.) & an award from Fast Frame.

During the winter, I’m grateful for the extra heat of the oven after lunch or dinner. I usually leave the oven door open until it reaches room temp. However, come Summer, or even Spring for that matter, I will start looking for alternative ways to cook without having to combat the heat of the oven for the rest of the day. Ceviche may be the simplest of them all. Ceviche is a method of cooking fish or seafood in citrus juice alone –without heat. It doesn’t produce the flaky fish you get from the oven, but if you’re a fan of sushi, you’ll love ceviche. This next Call is all about Aternative Techniques. I can’t wait to see this exhibit…

I remember that struggle eat, feed the child that wasted all their good behavior in the waiting area, try to manage the mashed up mess and smile at the wait staff and hope they think you’ve got it all under control. I don’t know why so many mothers feel the need to sustain the illusion that being a mother is easy. We know better. We are better. It is hard. We are up to the task. After co-directing Woman Made Gallery from 1993 to 2000, Janet Bloch is now the Executive Director at Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City, Indiana.

While on vacation recently, I was having dinner in a restaurant only to see the chef come out and clip herbs off a wall planter in the dining room. I have a friend that has installed a decorative green wall in their livingroom. And I know several others that are making vertical gardening plans. It seems planting vertical not only makes the best use of space, but it is more physically accessible for lots of people for whom bending and stooping are not an option. Walls of food, how lovely. This next Call is looking for your work surrounding the idea of walls.

Danielle has curated shows from Washington DC to Los Angeles, San Francisco to Toronto. In 2014 she published two books, titled “Creative Block” and “Collage”. Her third book, “Your Inner Critic Is A Big Jerk” was released in October 2016, and she is currently working a new book due out Fall 2018. Danielle has also had the great pleasure of speaking at TEDx, PIXAR, Creative Mornings, CreativeLive, and was interviewed for several video segments on oprah.com.

Kaiser graduated from New York University and is currently working on a series of temporary sculptures for Storm King Sculpture Center and Socrates Sculpture Park.

I was out having Thai food for lunch with a friend lately. I ordered massaman curry with shrimp; she ordered green curry with tofu. I will never understand. I said, “Tofu?”, and she replied, “of course, it is my favorite”. Seriously? I am certain there are a lot of people who appreciate tofu as a vegetarian-friendly protein that will take on the flavors of other foods. But she looked me in the face and said, “it is my favorite”. NO. It isn’t really anyone’s favorite, is it? I was looking at the face of deprivation, right? Someone explain tofu to me. Again. Please.
