bananas

I am addicted to potassium-rich foods.  Beets and brussel sprouts, bananas and baked potatoes.  And now I’ve read multiple articles that indicate my choice in foods might have determined the gender of my child.  Interesting, eh?  Are you convinced?  I’m not either.  This next Call is all about gender and the rights and freedoms associated with being a female.  The show is open to both genders.  Say it with art…

tells all

I don’t cook a lot. I feel confined by cooking a specific meal for the same audience day in and day out.  So, my husband does most of the cooking.  But, brunch is a different story.  Typically if we are cooking brunch (as opposed to dining out), we have guests over in celebration.  Plus, brunch offers an opportunity to show of skills and creations that span breakfast, lunch, dinner and even dessert–my whole portfolio, if you will.  This next call wants to see YOUR whole portfolio. Take a look…

Check out this Call for Entries for The Portfolio Show from the Kiernan Gallery (Lexington, Virginia). The entry is high compared to what I normally published, but I want you to make the decision about value to your own career.  If the shoe fits…

Every photograph tells a story.  When part of a body of work, the photograph takes on a new meaning, becoming part of a bigger and more complete narrative.  A portfolio allows the photographer to explore the complexities of their subject, and provide context that gives it richness and meaning that is more than the sum of its parts.  The Kiernan Gallery is pleased to announce its first annual portfolio showcase.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: All photographic media are encouraged.

DEADLINE: April 26, 2012

Learn more about the Portfolio Show at the Kiernan Gallery!NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified of accepted work via email approximately eight days after the submission deadline.

ENTRY FEE: Non-refundable fee of $75

JUROR: For over twenty years Dan Estabrook has been making contemporary art using a variety of 19th-century photographic techniques. Recently he has focused on the earliest paper photographs – calotype negatives and salted paper prints – as sources for hand manipulation with paint and pencil. He balances his interests in photography with forays into sculpture, painting, drawing, and other works on paper.

Dan has exhibited widely and has received several awards, including an Artist’s Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts in 1994. He is also the subject of a recent documentary by Anthropy Arts. He is represented by the Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago, Daniel Cooney Fine Art in New York and Jackson Fine Arts in Atlanta. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

AWARDS:  Eight photographers will be selected for the exhibition, split into two shows. Four will show at a time. The first four will show from June 6 – July 14, the other four will show from July 18 – August 25 (groups to be determined by the gallery).

SALES: Artists exhibiting at the gallery may offer their work for sale. The Kiernan Gallery retains 30% of the sale price as commission.

But what I most love to collect is art. I have art stuffed in every nook and cranny of my house. Including a little carving of late artist Bob Ross (click here for image) who came in his own little cigarette box marked “Bob in a Box” part of a series by Bob Snead , Founder of Redux. LUNCH!

My favorite lunch box had Wonder Woman on it. It didn’t matter what it had in it; even olive loaf tasted better when it came enclosed in a box with Linda Carter’s face on it.  But between you and me, a sandwich made with Goober Grape always tasted better than olive loaf…then again, anything tastes better than olive loaf, ha.  I hope the opening of this next Call serves hors d’oeuvres in lunch boxes.  Save a Wonder Woman petit four for me…

Check out this Call for Entries from The Lunch Box Gallery (Miami, FL) for iPhoneography: Updated Visual Dialogs.  The entry fee is low, and there’s no shipping of work either.  And it is almost an all hung exhibit.  Anybody need a Miami-based show on their artistic resume?  So incredibly cool…

iPhoneography:
Updated Visual Dialogs

As an enabler for creative communication, iPhoneography has become a new medium for massive dialog, where images taken and edited with the iPhone are openly shared, sometimes instantly and some other times preceded by a complex creative process; regardless, is undeniable that all of these images project a part of the user’s self.

The exhibition “iPhoneography: Updated Visual Dialogs” as a whole will be an integral, heterogeneous and diverse expression of that avalanche of pixels that are being registered and shared in modern times; yet, in this immensity, every picture in the show becomes a window, a glimpse of the iPhoneographer’s vision, sensitivity and everyday life.

“iPhoneography: Updated Visual Dialogs” is inspired by Chase Jarvis famous quote…

“The Best Camera is the One That’s With You” ™.
Prove it!

ELIGIBILITY:  All iPhoneographers, national and international over 18 years of age.

MEDIA:
Pictures must be taken and
edited on the iPhone
(not on any other device)
.

DEADLINE:
March 4, 2012

NOTIFICATION:  All Hung (sort of).  All iPhoneographers will be automatically accepted to be featured in the gallery, joining this collective representation of the massive use of the medium; yet, at least 1 out of 3 photographs by every iPhoneographer will be printed and shown.

ENTRY FEE:  $15.00 is required for submitting up to 3 JPGs. You can submit more than once. Payment should be solely made via PayPal.

Why does beer come in six packs?  My house is dotted with six packs.  It isn’t like THAT.  I am NOT a beer drinker, but my husband IS a beer brewer.  My son’s room would be far less cluttered if beer were more efficiently packaged.  Did I forget to mention that my husband stores his beer under my 12-year-old’s bed? Okay, I am going to stop before this sounds even worse.  This call is a much better use of things that come in sixes.  Take a look…

I am a wierdo, admittedly. I am obsessed with food. I don’t drink coffee. I rarely wear pants. I won’t do much that can’t be done in four inch heels, and I don’t like prints…unless they are geometric. Oh yeah, that is just the tip of the weirdness iceberg. I like geometric food too…Gorgeous round egg yolks, little logs of goat cheese, and the perfect grid of a golden waffle.  This next Call shares my love of the geometric.  Take a look

GALLERY STATEMENT: “Every year for 50 years the L.A. Municipal Gallery has held its ‘Open Call’ exhibit where any artist can show up with their art and an entry fee (to benefit gallery programs) and the piece is shown.  The Los Angeles Center For Digital Art decided to launch an international experiment of the same nature where the artists upload images that are printed and hung by the gallery.

Prior Snap to Grid reception at LACDA!“The hundreds of works are displayed in a grid like installation (reminiscent of postcard art shows of the 1980’s) where every work submitted is exhibited.  The usual (less than democratic) selection process where only the precious few are chosen is turned on its head in a curatorial anarchy where everyone gets to participate and the viewer is literally left to be the judge. The show represents a snapshot of a current moment in art history when digital imaging has reached the hands of the many, an age where culture belongs to the ‘mobblogers’ around the globe.

“From Thailand to Texas, amateur to academic, beautiful to banal and beyond the monumental quantity and variety of “Snap to Grid” becomes an aesthetic experience where each individual piece adds to an agglomerative effect that has a life of its own.”

Be wary of free food.  I get invited to lots of business receptions and charity auctions.  The food isn’t terrible, just forgettable.  Forgettable food is simply a waste of time.  Don’t you have something better to do (or eat) than another Krab dip (the K is always the give away) or cheese ball?  Me too.  Here’s hoping the reception for this next Call results in better reception food.  Fingers crossed…

I don’t eat pine.

I enjoy the occasional Murder Mystery Dinner show, but I never want the mystery to be WHAT I am eating.  I have fairly adventurous taste in food, but I still want the courtesy of knowing what I am putting in my mouth.  For some reason, more than one chef has said to me, “I made it special for you, just try it.”  99% of the time they are right; however, for the occasional 1%, I have this to say to the chef, “If you had just TOLD me there were pine nuts in the wild boar dish, I could have spared you the public “ick” face when I tried it.”  So there.  This next Call is not really a Mystery for YOU, despite the name.  Investigate for yourself…

The Masters’ Mystery Art Show (MMAS) is an international annual art event featuring over 1000 artworks by more than 500 artists from 31 countries around the globe. It includes nationally and internationally recognized artists, many brilliant emerging artists, as well as a number of celebrities from other fields.  The MMAS was developed to benefit Florida International University’s Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts Program.   This event coincides with Art Basel and takes place at the Ritz-Carlton, Miami Beach.

The list of contributing artists, including a host of well-established names, will be widely publicized in advance.  Adding to the excitement will be the participation of renowned celebrities in different disciplines and selected local students will compliment the roster. The “mystery” is that the name of the artist for each work is kept secret during the exhibition, only to be revealed at the completion of the sale.  Thus the public is invited to “play detective” as they try to identify the artist – and be the first to buy the best!
