pretty PROVISIONS

Design impacts my food choices.  Bad or excessive packaging will decrease the chances that I will try a processed food.  And what’s with fruit like apples and oranges in individually wrapped packages?  Don’t they already have their own packaging?  I recently discovered that I am not the only one that chooses wine, at least in part, based on the label design.  It is okay; you can admit it too.  Design is a huge part of the impact of this art magazine.  I love this publication.  Maybe you will too…

Check out this Call for Entries from Creative Quarterly for Journal Issue No. 47.  From students to professionals, the eligibility on this opportunity is wide open.  Take a look…

SAUCY

I like to think I eat fairly clean.  But by coincidence, I ran out of all of my standard sauces at one time which necessitated my seeing them ALL in my shopping cart at once.  Who new? Soy, fish, oyster, Worcestershire, Thai chili, plum, four vinegars, 3 mustards, and lets not forget sriracha. In my defense, there ARE a few of scratch-made ones like barbecue & chocolate sauce.  It seems my portfolio of foods aren’t all as pure as I’d like to believe.  This next Call want your purely individual portfolio.  Take a look…

FUNGI

I’m afraid of eating wild mushrooms.  Correction, I am afraid of improperly identifying a mushroom as edible and doing unexpected harm to my family.  So, I have been trying to decide whether or not to grow them myself.  Growing mushrooms at home always conjures images of damp, basement-like conditions.  But research indicates I can crow them on logs in dappled shade, above ground, among the living, with fewer creepy-crawlies. This next Call want to know your views, wild OR domestic, but no veggies–just animals.  Take a look…

Herbs and spices always tell a meal’s story.  And those stories are shaped by our experiences. I have plastic envy.  Hoop houses are sprouting up all over town as pre-planning for chances of upcoming frost.  Last year our first snow came in October.  Locally lots of folks protect their late Summer plantings from possible early frost while also giving them space to start seedlings in colder weather.  Once the ground is frozen, installation becomes a much more complicated project.  My house hangs on the side of a mountain.  The only flat space I have for a hoop house is my gravel driveway, ha.  Jealous of plastic –never thought I’d have that problem.  This next Call will hopefully make you the object of the jealous.  Take a look…
