CALL for SUBMISSIONS: Bucktown Arts Fest

Learn more about the Bucktown Arts Fest Annual Poster contest!

say CHEESE

I can’t imagine how many times I have written the words “I love goat cheese”.  It is easy for me to for to write these posts and reveal my food soul and forget that people READ these posts.  But when I give career development seminars, I have readers that show up (thank you) and have conversations with me about food that remind me that people know way too much about what I eat, ha.  Recently at a seminar about branding yourself as an artist, I had someone bring me goat’s milk soap since they couldn’t keep goat’s milk cheese cold. ♥  This next Call doesn’t have a lot of requirements, but one of them is that your design must include a goat.  No, I’m not kidding.

Check out this Call for Submissions from Bucktown Arts Fest (Chicago, IL) for Annual Poster Contest.  This is a great resume builder for the winner. Take a look…

CALL for ENTRIES: American Icon

Learn more about the American Icon Competition from the Sausalito Art Festival!light my FIRE

As people celebrating Independence Day in the U.S. are want to do, my neighbors are grilling all manner of food.  In the fifteen feet I walked to my car, I was assaulted by the smell of lighter fluid.  What is it about the 4th of July that makes people want to light charcoal on fire and char meats & marshmallows.  Is that motivation uniquely American?  I made enchiladas; does that make me less American?  This next Call is looking for uniquely American work.  What will you show them?

Check out this Call for Entries from Sausalito Art Festival (Sausalito, CA) for American Icon.  This is an art festival Call that doesn’t require that you have an exhibition booth if selected.  Entry is only $10, plus there are cash prizes.  Check it out…

Learn more about the Joshua Tree National Park Art Expo from the Joshua Tree National Park Council for the Arts!YUCA, not yucca

Tapioca is an other-worldly food.  I love the pearls in pudding and starch as a thickener, but I still find it odd.  Many people think it is a grain, like wheat, but it is processed as a product of the cassava plant.  You may know it as yuca, which can be found from Brazil to Nigeria, but don’t confuse it for yucca, the similar-sounding decorative plant that is related to the Joshua Tree.  And whatever you do, don’t eat a Joshua Tree, ha. The Park behind the next Call would probably like for me to reiterate that point –don’t eat Joshua Tree; but DO make art inspired by them.  Take a look…

lessons

Miserable failure is the only path to culinary success.  It is true.  There are no short cuts.  You have to try and try again, analyzing results and altering methods along the way.  The first few dozen times I soft boiled an egg, made a hollandaise or cheese sauce, the results were less than desirable, but I am grateful for my desire to learn how. I didn’t turn out to be a chef but it increased my perspective.  The same holds true for this Call. This media might not be in your skill set, and it may never be your first choice.  But, pursing the idea or learning a new skill may give you a new perspective on your own media.  You CAN be successfully project driven, just try…

CHERRIES

Did you know there is an edible form of the dogwood? Cornus Mas, aka Cornelius Cherry Dogwood, produces small ruby red or yellow fruit that makes great jam.  The fruit is a common Iranian snack when salted, and I’ve even heard rumors that a few home brewers have been make wine from the fruit.  I’m thinking that finding the jam might be the easiest start.  In the meantime, let’s celebrate the non-edible dogwood by making art for this next Call.  Take a look…

NO CHICKEN
for dinner

I have nieces in college that will only eat chicken & potatoes.  More accurately, their preference is chicken fingers & fries.  These ladies are in their twenties.  Their parents chose their battles, so to speak, and apparently food wasn’t one of them.  Even on special occasions like holidays & birthdays (not even their own), someone always cooks chicken fingers, nuggets or tenders for these two just to keep the peace.  This would be a declaration of war in my house.  This next Call wants YOUR take on conflict–not just from the battleground either.  This is a great opportunity to stretch your artistic self conceptually…
