What makes comfort food a comforting food? I have a friend whose local tradition is bring food to a grieving family.  Upon the death of her cousin, she noted that a half-dozen dishes of macaroni and cheese, two layered dips and three lasagnas, none of them comforting to all.  For me it is fried green tomatoes, and occasionally goat cheese.  After a little research it seems that it isn’t the cheese or butter or starch that makes comfort food, it is familial connection, the security of childhood (if you had any).  I am fairly certain my father never tasted goat cheese in his life, but my grandmother made the best fried green tomatoes ever.  So, maybe.  I don’t know.  What do you think?  This next Call is all about Grief (not necessarily the accompanying food).  Investigate…

ELIGIBILITY: Open to all artists

MEDIA: Photography

THEME:  Grief. “Our hearts can break in many different ways. We expect mourning to end but oftentimes it manifests in other actions. We learn to restructure our lives and identify our worst thoughts as an avenue for growth. Maybe it leads to art making. Maybe we photographed this seemingly impossible event. We create photographs for different reasons, whether personal, political, for the purpose of change or a combination of these motivations. This call is for images made anywhere along the path of the grieving process.” –Frances Jakubek

DEADLINE:  February 28, 2018

ENTRY FEE: $20 for up to 3. 20% of artist fees go to 2 charities –½ to the curator’s choice of charity & ½ goes to the 1st place winner’s choice.  Anne Eder has chosen the Facing Addiction.

CURATOR:  Frances Jakubek is the Head of Exhibitions at Bruce Silverstein Gallery in New York City and past Associate Curator of the Griffin Museum of Photography in Massachusetts. Jakubek has been a guest writer for Don’t Take Pictures, Diffusion Magazine and for artist and gallery publications. She was a panelist for the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Photography fellowships, speaker for The Photo Brigade and juror for international exhibitions including ‘The Fence’ and PDN’s ‘The Curator Awards’. For her personal work, (though it’s all personal), recent exhibitions include The Griffin Museum of Photography, Boston, MA; Filter Photo Space, Chicago, IL; The Southern Contemporary Art Gallery in Charleston, SC; Camera Commons in Dover, NH; The Hess Gallery at Pine Manor College, MA; Plates to Pixels Online Gallery; and the Dorchester Art Project, MA.

AWARDS:  The curator chooses 1st place, 2nd place & 3 honorable mentions. The 1st place winner will receive a review by one or more curators including a Q&A about the photographer’s work. In addition, their image will be on the home page for a month. 2nd place & honorable mentions will have their image shown along with their bio, artist statement, C.V. and a link back to their website.

SALES: All sales are conducted between the artist & buyer.  There is no commission.
